Environmental Services Intern
The Environmental Services Intern reporting location is at 4477 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92110, San Diego Coast District Office. This position will report to the District Senior Environmental Scientist and works under the direction of the District Environmental Scientist.
The Environmental Services Intern (ESI) will lead grunion monitoring efforts at State Beaches within the San Diego Coast District. The majority of the work involves surveying and documenting grunion spawning events, coordinating volunteers, and managing data. Other job duties may include dune restoration; vegetation management; planting and cultivating native plant material; installing permanent and temporary fencing and signage; installing and repairing irrigation systems; vegetation and bird monitoring; documenting work in statewide databases; and assisting with the preparation of reports. The ESI will assist District staff in project review to ensure compliance with environmental laws and permitting needs.
The incumbent’s general work schedule will be Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. Weekend and evening work will be required during grunion runs. This position is funded through June 30, 2025, with the possibility to extend dependent on future budget allocations. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.
The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification. Appointments to this class are made under temporary authority (TAU) and are limited to no more than nine months of full-time equivalent work. No permanent appointments will be made. The time a person can serve in a temporary appointment must not exceed 9 months in 12-consecutive months or 189 days of work. When serving in a TAU appointment, the incumbent does not acquire probationary or permanent status or rights.

Working Conditions
The majority of each workday will be spent working outside in state parks in the San Diego Coast District. Fieldwork requires the ability to use tools, carry heavy loads, hike over uneven terrain, perform tasks requiring repetitive movements, and work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions. While at your base of operation, you will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting in an office.
