Position Overview

 

 

This position is accountable for performing laboratory tests and records the results on materials used for district, county, local and other state agency transportation projects. 

Essential Functions

  • Performs materials tests to determine whether the product conforms to approved standards and/or determine properties of the product.
  • Maintains, complete and accurate materials test records.
  • Assists in calibrating and maintaining laboratory testing equipment to ensure information is accurate.
  • Performs data entry.
  • Maintains, repairs and calibrates field testing equipment.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or job related technical/science curriculum OR two years of engineering experience.

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and traverse stairs, ladders, and rough terrain.
  • Overtime and outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, active construction sites, drilling sites, and roads open to traffic.
  • IDOT QC/QA Certification in, or ability to successfully obtain IDOT QC/QA Certification in, Aggregate and HMA Level I within twelve months of hire date.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol tests.

  • As an Engineering Technician I, you have the possibility of promoting to an Engineering Technician II within 12-24 months.
  • A possibility of promoting to an Engineering Technician III within 18-30 months.
