MU Games Area Student Mechanic (STDT2)

HIRING DEPARTMENT: MEMORIAL UNION

  • Pay Rate: $17.00/hr. (includes .50 Difficulty in Recruiting differential)
  • Approximate Hours Per Week: 10-19.5 (Variable, around class schedule)
  • Location: Games Area, Memorial Union
  • Required in-person training begins: 9/4/2024

 

Objective: We are hiring for the 2025-2026 academic year, with work starting September 10, 2025. Summer work is available and optional but requires a commitment to the academic year. Mandatory training will be held September 10-12 and September 15-16 in Davis. Attendance at all sessions is required.

Job Description

The Games Area is a recreational unit that operates within the Memorial Union that includes 12 bowling lanes, 7 billiard tables, 14 gaming PCs, and an open lobby. It is open 7 days per week and serves more than 200,000 visitors annually.

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of machinery in the Games Area, primarily but not limited to the bowling lanes, pinsetters, and ball return machines. Minor maintenance, repair, cleaning, and odd jobs around the facility as warranted may also be required, in addition to assisting in customer service duties at the service desk.

Perform high-level repairs.

This position is a Mandated Reporter and must follow all University policies regarding CANRA. 

Hours: variable, around class schedule.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent mechanical and repair skills to service bowling pinsetters and other Games Area equipment, with familiarity using mechanical tools including wrenches, screwdrivers, power drills, hammers, pliers, etc.
  • Problem solving skills and internet research skills to find solutions to complex and complicated problems.
  • Experience in repairing Qubica Xli Edge bowling pinspotters
  • Teamwork skills to collaborate on lengthy and difficult repairs and projects. Collaboration skills to work as a part of a large and diverse group.
  • Cleaning skills to properly handle and apply chemicals to surfaces safely.
  • Facility operation skills to maintain a clean and safe work area/facility, and sufficiently communicate out issues and problems.
  • Must be able to work 10-19.5 hours per week (about 3-4 shifts) including early mornings, late nights (2am facility closing), weekends, breaks, and most holidays.
  • Must be able to lift at least 70 lbs. without assistance and move equipment, on wheels, weighing up to 400+ lbs.
  • Must be fully certified by Qubica AMF as a trained mechanic
  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.

 

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Experience providing customer service and interacting with visitors.
  • Experience in cash handling.
  • Previous work or volunteering experience in a bowling/gaming facility.
  • Familiarity with bowling/billiards/consoles/PC games/board games.
