Intern, Library and Archives

Chippewa Valley Museum, located in Eau Claire’s beautiful Carson Park, is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate intern to work with the L.G. Arnold StoryMap, as well as other museum collections. Work will take place at the Glenn Curtis Smoot Library and Archive within the Chippewa Valley Museum, under the supervision of the museum’s Archivist.

 

This collection consists of photos from jobs completed by L.G. Arnold, Inc. Arnold was a civil engineer whose company was responsible for major road, bridge, and building construction projects in the Chippewa Valley and beyond, from about 1912 to 1976. The anticipated Summer 2025 project will focus on expanding the L.G. Arnold StoryMap, with other archival activities as time and interest allow. This internship is supported by Dean Arnold and includes a $2,025 stipend for 135 hours of work. It will advance the selected student’s digital collections skills and familiarity with museum archiving methods, as well as the museum’s mission to connect people to the community and inspire curiosity. The position is open to any student pursuing a degree in higher education. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Scan photos and documents
  • Create slideshows with scanned photos
  • Prepare digital files for storage
  • Edit digital photographs
  • Catalog photos in PastPerfect museum software 
  • Document a procedure for tasks completed 
  • Research L.G. Arnold jobs using newspapers and archival sources
  • Upload completed slideshows and photos to a StoryMap
  • Provide regular progress reports to museum Archivist. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Required: Good written and oral communication skills 
  • Required: Ability to work on-site at the museum 1-2 days a week (at least 8 hours weekly)
  • Required: Current enrollment in an institution of higher learning
  • Preferred: Experience with archival research
  • Preferred: Interest in digital archiving 
  • Preferred: Experience with scanning equipment
  • Preferred: Experience with Photoshop or similar software
  • Desirable: Reliable
  • Desirable: Strong work ethic
  • Desirable: Detail oriented 

 

Stipend: $2,025 for 135 hours of work between May and August, 2025.
