GIS/Mapping Intern

About Us:

Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) is a community-owned utility provider based in Elk River, Minnesota. It provides electric and water services to residents and businesses in the area. Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS/Mapping Intern to join our team. The intern will assist with geospatial data collection, analysis, and visualization to support various projects. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in GIS applications, mapping technologies, and spatial data management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with collecting, cleaning, and analyzing spatial data from multiple sources.
  • Create and maintain GIS datasets, shapefiles, and geodatabases.
  • Produce high-quality maps, visualizations, and reports using ArcGIS, QGIS, or other GIS software.
  • Perform geospatial analysis to support project goals.
  • Collaborate with team members on data-driven projects and mapping tasks.
  • Support field data collection using GPS and mobile mapping applications.
  • Conduct quality control and ensure accuracy of spatial data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in (or recent graduate with a degree in) Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, GIS, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or similar platforms).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with geospatial data formats (shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Python or SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing, GPS, or drone technologies.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
