Internship Description: The Testing Laboratory Intern will be trained in “cradle to grave” sample processing and analytical testing under a flexible work schedule. Interns will receive comprehensive exposure to all aspects of the laboratory setting. Our goal is to provide interns with a positive experience in the industry, build interest in environmental testing and hopefully retain their services beyond the duration of the internship.

Summer 2025 Internship

Pay: $17 per hour

Hours: Up to 30 hours per week is available

Requirements:

  • Must have declared a major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Biology.
  • Must have completed coursework in Organic Chemistry II.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater.
  • Must have good communication skills (will have some client interaction).
  • Must have good computer skills both in typing and Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Must have good attention to detail.
  • Must have an understanding of client confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work independently and with a team.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and meet client deadlines.

Internship Training/Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Orientation and familiarity with laboratory procedures for QA/QC, Health and Safety, Hazardous Waste and general company policies
  • Check in and unpack samples upon receipt in lab
  • Review and completion of Chain of Custody documentation and scanning
  • Distribution of samples to lab areas and storage
  • Kit preparation and timely shipment of kits to clients
  • Sample disposal according to procedures
  • Review AEL SOPs for analyses assigned
  • Familiarize with instrumentation applicable to assigned analyses
  • Demonstrate basic operation of instrument(s)
  • Conduct IDOCs: Initial Demonstration of Capability (required for each individual analysis)
  • Conducts analyses under direct supervision of trainer or until evaluation by QA officer and trainer/lab manager allows for unsupervised performance on select analyses
  • Demonstrate proficiency with computers, laboratory LIMS and spreadsheets
  • Some clerical work may be involved including data entry and logging in of samples
  • Assist with laboratory organization, supply inventory, calibrations, and cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Criteria for Consideration for Permanent Positions:

  • Proficient at assigned analyses without direct supervision
  • Successful completion of IDOCs
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team working skills
  • Ability to recognize existing problems, foresee potential problems, and implement measures to eliminate or reduce the probability of occurrence and/or minimize their impact
  • Evaluation by trainer/lab manager
