Mechanical Engineering Student Ambassador (MESA)
Serve as an ambassador for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This role includes administrative support for the department, tutoring Mechanical Engineering students, and creating and leading programming to support departmental retention and recruitment efforts. This position requires a proactive student who takes initiative, is committed to being an active member of a team and has a strong desire to support others.
Student Support and Tutoring:
• Assist students with basic registration questions; refer students to advisors’ drop-in hours for additional support
• Tutor students on courses required for the Mechanical Engineering major
• Plan and execute peer mentoring and support initiatives
• Plan, schedule, lead, and conduct meetings and events related to supporting Mechanical Engineering students
• Develop methods and processes for improving and sustaining interaction of targeted student populations
Leadership:
• Set an example as a role model to other students

• Help establish a culture of support
• Build community amongst Mechanical Engineering students
• Lead, develop, and grow peer mentoring programming initiatives
• Initiate collaboration among other Engineering and CSU student groups and organizations to strengthen and bolster retention of underrepresented and general student populations in the Mechanical Engineering Department
• Create team meeting agendas and facilitate meetings in collaboration with the other MESA ambassadors
• Participate in college-wide and departmental recruitment and retention events and activities
Administrative Tasks:
• Greet and check students in for drop-in advising
• Assist with departmental projects, as needed
• Track students who attend MESA office hours
• Develop reports on programming and other MESA activities
• Meet with and give tours to prospective students and their families
• Implement outreach activities to prospective future Mechanical Engineering students
• Create literature, handouts, and schedules, as needed for retention and/or recruitment purposes or for operational/administrative needs

This position will prepare this student employee in building leadership skills, program development, team building, and administrative structure. These skill sets are key in a student’s academic career and have a strong, relative intersect with their future career endeavors.
This position also allows student employees to apply fundamentals of engineering knowledge when conveying and sharing such concepts with Mechanical Engineering students and with prospective students and their families.
In summary, this position will expand skill sets pertinent to the engineering profession, not typically afforded via coursework.
Eligibility:
• MECH Students who are graduating between Spring 2026 and Spring 2027 will be given preference.
• A 3.0 or higher cumulative CSU GPA is required.
• This is a $16/hour paid position.
• Preference will be given to students who have work study BUT you do not need to have work study to apply for this position.
• If you do not have a current work study award, the application to get one opens in May prior to the start of this position. Historically, we have been able to secure work study awards for all successful candidates. In the event work study is not awarded, we may hire Non-Work Study Students based on available funding.
• MESA students work an average of 9-11 hours per week.
