Job Summary:

This position is located in the Department Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), Health and Wellness Division. The mission of DYRS is to improve public safety and give court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youths and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety.

The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Dietitian, responsible for the provision of nutritional and dietetic services to youth at DYRS facilities, including a comprehensive nutrition education and wellness program. The incumbent is responsible for the development, provision and implementation of cycle menus and nutrition programs that comply with the federal Child Nutrition Program, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the DC Office of the State Superintendent. The Supervisory Dietitian also provides clinical nutritional consultations and counseling for youth with specialized dietary needs and modifications. The incumbent provides expert nutritional assistance and collaborate with healthcare providers, facility staff, and the Medical Director to foster and enhance optimal health and nutritional adequacy for the youth.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Supervisory Dietitian works under the direction of the Medical Director. The incumbent shall receive direction from the Medical Director who shall set objectives and determine available resources and works with incumbent, in consultation, to develop the deadlines, projects, and work to be done. The incumbent independently plans, designs and executes projects and assignments aligned according to established policy, governing regulations and standards of the unit, Agency, District of Columbia and nationally established guidelines for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Guidelines include federal, district, and agency health regulations, nutrition practices, and procedures, as well as reference materials such as the ADA Diet Manual, NCCHC Standards, DYRS policies, and clinical nutrition standards.

The Supervisory Dietitian uses initiative and resourcefulness in obtaining necessary information to provide expert technical assistance and optimum nutritional care. Interprets the guidelines and adapts them to fit a variety of work situations. Utilizes initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods to develop new methods, criteria, propose new policies, or modes of treatment within the bounds of safety and effectiveness. Prepares and incorporates culturally appropriate and diverse meal options, nutrition screenings, and assessments based on patient's medical and psychiatric needs. Provides individualized dietary assessments and consultations for youth with specific health or dietary restrictions, including allergies, food intolerances, medical conditions, various psychopharmacologic requirements, and religious or cultural preferences in coordination with medical and mental health teams and to comply with medical orders. Records information in the individual’s medical record.

Qualifications and Education

Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science.  The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education  at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012).

Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Licenses and Certifications

This position requires current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association (ADA) or the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

This position requires licensure with the District of Columbia Regulatory Agency (DCRA). Must be a Registered Licensed Dietitian, or eligible for licensure upon hire.

This position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Work Environment

The incumbent works primarily in an office setting however, some tasks will require being in the kitchen of juvenile correctional facilities.

Other Significant Facts:

Tour of Duty: M-F during normal work hours between 7:00am-6:00pm (8-hour shift) (Times are flexible pending department needs and supervisory approval)

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not a part of a Collective Bargaining Unit.

Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS): At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Essential Designation: This position has been designated as an Essential position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties that are vital to the continuity of medical facilities, public safety, emergency services, and/or other crucial operations. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees designated as essential shall be required to be at work regardless of the emergency situation declared.
