Treasurer's Office - Cohort Intern for Accounting

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program.

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Office of the Treasurer

The Office of the Treasurer is looking for a tech-savvy individual who is eager to gain hands-on accounting experience for an exciting full-time, one-year Cohort Internship. Over the course of a year, the Cohort Intern for Accounting will gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They will support the Office of the Treasurer's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public sector accounting environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Internship

Over the course of a year, the Cohort Intern for Accounting will gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They will support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Key Info

• We anticipate filling these positions in May to commence between June 1, 2025, and July 15, 2025, but interns may begin at an earlier date dependent on department need. 
• This is not a remote opportunity; employees are expected to be in the office full time. 
• Interns are also expected to participate in both in-office work assignments as well as the in-person cohort trainings.

Responsibilities

Within the Accounting Division of the Treasurer’s Office, as a cohort intern, you would be under the direct supervision of the Deputy Treasurer for Accounting as a mentor. This intern will be tasked with a variety of Accounting responsibilities, including:

• Preparing asset and liability, financial entries by compiling and analyzing account information; 
• Documenting financial transactions by entering account information into various systems; 
• Summarizing current financial status by collecting information, preparing balance sheets, revenue and expenditure statements, and other reports; 
• Substantiating financial transactions by auditing documents; 
• Compiling and analyzing data to create visualizations facilitating decision-making; 
• Working with the Treasurer’s Office technology team to streamline reporting processes; and, 
• Improving the efficacy and accuracy of existing accounting processes by automating routine tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Recent, (2024 Or 2025) college graduates earning either a Bachelor or a Master Degree In the area of consideration prior to the start date of the Internship must have

• No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and 
• Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.  Note: Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.

Degree Requirements

Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.

Desirable Qualifications

 Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

• G.P.A. of 3.0 or better preferred, applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint; 
• Working knowledge of Oracle or similar accounting or ERP software; and/or 
• CPA candidate.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information

Work Hours: This is a full-time position, with working hours from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is not a remote opportunity; employees are expected to be in the office full time.

All positions within the Treasurer's Office are Non-Bargaining.
