Technician in Residence - Prop Master

Position Summary: Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking a Technician in Residence – Prop Master to join our dynamic production team! This role is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional looking to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, creative environment.

As the Technician in Residence – Prop Master, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of prop management for productions across campus. In addition to managing and maintaining props, this role will support Interlochen Presents through scenic painting, load-ins, strikes, and other essential production tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for purchasing, pulling, and building all props.
  • Responsible for assisting the scenic designer in the painting of scenery.
  • Occasionally assist the shop manager and carpenter in the scene shop.
  • Works with construction materials: Wood, composite, plastics, steel, aluminum, and fabric.
  • Responsible for common construction techniques: furniture building, finish woodworking, specialty prop building, and upholstering.
  • Able to read construction drawings and use an architect’s scale ruler.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the shop and theatrical venues
  • Seeks the best use of materials, and equipment to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.
  • Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
  • Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or 2 years of related professional experience required. 

Experience: Seeking professional level experience. Experience working in a Performing Arts Center, Professional Theatre or academic arts environment is required.

Equipment Familiarity: Experience with all scene shop related equipment: power tools, hand tools, mig/tig welder, Autocad/Vectorworks, Adobe Suite with an emphasis on Photoshop/ Illustrator, 3D-Printing, CNC router, and Vacuforming.

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training: 

  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. 
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving)
