Title: Summer Student Deskie
Basic Function and Responsibility: Responsible for providing various desk services for residence hall students, conference participants, and other University guests.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Know and abide by departmental expectations regarding student employees.
- Perform housing sign-up, check-in, room change, and other related activities.
- Respond to requests for information regarding general University and residence hall/guest housing operations, as well as more specific area policies, procedures, and practices.
- Provide change, sell stamps, and follow established procedures regarding handling money.
- Receive and record service calls, communicate with custodial staff in response to emergency/critical maintenance items, and notify a resident director of facility issues.
- Check out recreational and other equipment and maintain appropriate records of those transactions.
- Ensure cleanliness of the desk area providing for a neat and orderly atmosphere.
- Provide security for the desk area, to include preventing entry by unauthorized personnel and the security of money and equipment.
- Supervise lobby/lounge areas to ensure that student behavior is appropriate and the area and the furnishings are maintained properly.
- Type correspondence and reports as requested.
- Operate Google Suite.
- Deliver packages to authorized recipients when applicable, maintaining accurate records regarding mail delivery.
- Sort and distribute all received mail.
- Perform or assist others in the performance of routine custodial and maintenance duties in residence halls (e.g. removing trash, cleaning and straightening the furniture in the lobby, mopping up water, replacing light bulbs, removing snow and ice from entryways, etc.).
- Within the limits of training and direction from supervisors, confront inappropriate behavior and/or notify live-in staff regarding behavioral problems or potential behavioral problems.
- Assist with additional custodial, maintenance, and security activities as requested by the resident directors responsible for the assigned residence halls.
- Report to the appropriate personnel during emergency situations (e.g. fire, flood, bomb threats, disorderly situations, etc.) and assist as directed or appropriate.
- Arrange for a qualified replacement desk receptionist in instances where work cannot be performed due to emergencies or valid absences.
- Participate in various training programs as requested.
- Provide written or verbal reports as directed.
- Utilize and update computer logs throughout each shift.
- Assist students in providing and processing paperwork.
- Assist students with key and card swipe (lost or malfunctioning) issues. Issue temporary cards or keys as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned or appropriate.
- Work in an acceptable and safe manner.
- Return to campus early and leave later to assist with desk opening and closing to cover break periods.
- Assist with Summer Camp/Conference and Orientation operations as needed
- Assist with Housing Office operations as needed
- Will be able to work up to 37.5 hours per week
Supervision Received: Designated student desk advisor and assigned Coordinator of Residence Life/Apartment Coordinator.
Supervision Exercised: None
Minimum Qualifications
- Polite, tactful, and helpful in dealing with the public, students, and members of the University community.
- The ability to exercise initiative and maturity to respond appropriately to problems or potential problems.
- Free of academic or social probation.
- Must live on campus.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience working with the public or customer service.
- Building custodial, maintenance, or security experience.
- Previous experience with computer applications.
- Work study qualified
