2025 - Summer Desk Adviser - Housing & Residence Life
Title: Summer Desk Adviser
Basic Function and Responsibility: Provide various services for residence hall students and staff, University guests, conference participants, etc.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Know and abide by departmental expectations regarding student employees
- Meet with assigned supervisor regularly for reporting, assessment, planning, problem solving, etc. as directed or deemed appropriate
- Assist with the recruitment, selection and evaluation of desk staff
- Develop assigned student employee work schedules and assist with re-scheduling problems as appropriate
- Assist in the development and implementation of training sessions
- Supervise the work of assigned desk receptionists
- Plan and conduct staff meetings
- Respond appropriately to concerns and/or problems that may arise with assigned desk staff.
- Perform desk receptionist duties, as appropriate, e.g.
- Perform housing sign-up, check-in, room change, and other related activities
- Respond to request for information regarding general University and residence hall/ guest housing operations, as well as more specific area policies, procedures, and practices
- Provide change, sell stamps, and follow established procedures regarding handling money
- Receive and record service calls, communicate with custodial staff in response to emergency- critical maintenance items, and notify two resident directors of facility issues
- Check out recreation and other equipment and maintain appropriate records of those transactions
- Type correspondence or reports as requested
- Ensure cleanliness of desk area providing a neat and orderly atmosphere
- Provide security for the desk area to include preventing entry by unauthorized personnel and security of money and equipment
- Supervise lobby and observe security cameras to ensure that guest/visitor behavior is appropriate and the area and furnishings are utilized properly
- Deliver packages to authorized recipients, maintaining accurate records regarding mail delivery
- Assist students with providing and processing paperwork
- Perform change orders as necessary
- Help to ensure building security by performing weekly key audits
- Check and maintain the desk email account
- Review the computer logs to ensure accuracy and respond to problems
- Return to campus early and leave late to assist with desk opening and closing during break periods
- Provide written or verbal reports as directed
- Perform other duties as assigned or appropriate
- Work in an acceptable and safe manner
- Assist with Summer Camp/Conference and Orientation operations as needed
- Assist with Housing Office operations as needed
- Will be able to work up to 37.5 hours per week
Supervision Received: Supervision is received from a full-time Housing and Residence Life Staff Member and/or a Resident Director
Supervision Exercised: Advises assigned desk receptionist staff
Minimum Qualifications:
- Meet the qualifications stated in the Student Employment Handbook
- At least one-year desk receptionist experience
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with supervisory staff and colleagues
- Demonstrated initiative, maturity, and good decision-making and problem-solving ability
- Free of Disciplinary Probation imposed through the University's student conduct program throughout the application process and not admit guilt or be found guilty through the disciplinary process of having violating University rules and regulations while employed.
- Have a minimum of a 2.00 cumulative GPA and 2.00 for the previous semester
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- Continuing on-campus residency
- Previous residence hall desk experience or live-in staff experience
- Supervisory experience
- Previous customer service training or experience
- Previous experience in a cash accountability
- Willingness to accept the responsibility leading to a higher classification student position
- Work study qualified
Compensation includes:
Single residence hall room including mini refrigerator. Dining dollars totaling $300 for the summer and $150 a week food allowance.
