Period of Employment
This is a live-in position starting Sunday, May 4th and ending Sunday, August 3rd.
Basic Function and Responsibility
Responsible for security of residence hall facilities, equipment, and supplies and for minor maintenance and for initiating departmental response to emergency situations in residence halls after regular business hours and on weekends during the summer break period.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Know and abide by departmental expectations for student employees.
- Know and follow departmental standards for security, energy conservation, emergency maintenance priorities, and other relevant policies and procedures.
- Know departmental expectation of keys and monitor proper closing and locking of doors.
- Fulfill scheduled duty requirements.
- Operate an on-call iPhone.
- Represent the University well through communication, dress, and manner.
- Routinely inspect the assigned area to ensure that the buildings, equipment, and supplies are secure and that they give a positive impression of the University, and respond appropriately to any problems.
- Perform routine, minor custodial and maintenance duties in the assigned community after hours or on weekends (e.g., remove trash, sweep/mop, replace light bulbs, do weekend linen exchanges, etc.) as assigned or as appropriate.
- Assist summer housing staff as appropriate or requested, including checking summer guests into or out of their room after hours.
- Provide on-call services from 4PM-7:30AM on duty nights.
- Work with adjacent summer security assistant to create and maintain a duty board so guests may contact you when necessary
- Accurately assess and respond to potential emergency situations, hazardous situations, and emergency situations, contacting department or other staff as appropriate.
- Prepare reports as appropriate or requested to include communication through the Security Assistant Rounds log.
- Assist guests with key and card issues (lost or malfunctioning).
- Participate in all required meetings and training programs as assigned by supervisor.
- Work in a safe manner, observing safety, health, and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the University or governmental authority.
Supervision Received
The summer security assistant receives supervision from the 12-month Resident Director.

Minimum Qualifications
- Have a minimum of a 2.00 cumulative GPA and 2.00 for the previous semester.
- Successfully completed at least 12 semester hours of academic work at NMU prior to you submitting an application for the position, or be a transfer student with at least 12 successfully completed academic hours at the previous institution and be taking a minimum of 12 academic hours during the Winter 2024 semester at NMU.
- Free of Disciplinary Probation imposed through the University’s student conduct program throughout the application process and not admit guilt or be found guilty through the disciplinary process of having violated University rules and regulations while employed.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively with supervisory staff and colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities of the position without close supervision and the initiative and maturity to respond to problems and potential problems appropriately.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Continuing on-campus residency
- Residence hall staff experience
- Previous customer service training or experience
- Building security or maintenance experience
- Work-study qualified
Compensation
Residence hall room (single), $2,000 in dining dollars for the summer and $154 per week in meal allowance.
The option of working 37.5 hours per week at an on or off-campus job. (Staff members requesting to work additional hours must do so with approval from their supervisor). Employees must be back on campus by 4pm on duty nights.
