Curriculum Development Intern (NJ)

The Melanin Village is a social-impact organization dedicated to increasing educational outcomes and opportunities for Black children by helping their families to provide a world-class education at home. Over the last three years, we have empowered over 600 families and 1,000 children with high-quality, culturally-affirming academic programming. Our work and impact has been featured on PBS, MSNBC, and the TODAY Show. 

In Winter 2025 we’re launching Mosaic, a comprehensive homeschool curriculum that centers African American contributions, impacts, and perspectives throughout history. The curriculum follows a "family-style" learning approach where multiple ages can learn together, with differentiated materials allowing each child to work at their appropriate level. Furthermore, our curriculum is multi-subject and includes comprehensive coverage of language arts, social studies, science, and art in meaningful, interconnected ways. Position Summary

In this role, you will be essential to the development and launch of our forthcoming curriculum.  Curriculum Development Intern to help create and refine culturally-affirming curriculum materials that will serve hundreds of families across the nation. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to educational innovation while gaining hands-on experience in curriculum development that centers Black excellence and achievement.

As our Curriculum Development intern, you will:

  • Develop engaging, interdisciplinary lessons that integrate language arts, geography, art, history, social studies, and science using The Melanin Village format and generative AI tools, such as Claude.
  • Perform quality assurance (QA) checks on current lesson plans checking for accuracy, quality, and clarity. For example, you might perform an at-home science experiment to ensure we obtain the desired results. Likewise, you might fact-check historical content.
  • Record video, audio, and other resources that will be used to enhance our curriculum. For example, you might record a video to walk learners through how to complete an art activity.
  • Find and plan supplemental activities like field trips (virtual or in-person) that will complement and enhance the learning experience.
  • Communicate and collaborate with our team.


 

Who You Are

  • Current student (undergraduate or graduate) or recent graduate in Education, English Language Arts, History, Art, or Science, or Marketing
  • You have a passion for educational equity and Black excellence
  • You are committed, timely, and pay close attention to detail
  • You’re interested in homeschool education and alternative learning models
  • With an all hands-on-deck mindset, there is no job too big or too small for you.
  • People might call you a perfectionist because of the intentionality and integrity with which you operate.

Benefits & Pay

This internship is being funded by The NJ Career Accelerator Internship Grant Program and has fixed wage and required minimum hours. 

  • Fully remote position at $20/hour
  • Flexibly, fixed schedule | Your internship will be between 15 and 20 hours per week over the span of ten weeks between May and August. Your exact working hours are flexible, as long as you have some day time flexibility to accommodate team meetings and collaboration. Your schedule will be determined during your application process and will remain the same for the duration of your internship.
  • Maximum hours | You may work a maximum of 200 hours during this internship.
