Case Management Intern

Internship Opportunity: Case Management Intern Department: Franklin/Fulton Drug & Alcohol Program Location: Franklin & Fulton Counties, PA Commitment: Flexible, Unpaid Internship (April – September)

About the Opportunity

Are you a master’s-level student seeking hands-on experience in case management, substance use disorder treatment, and behavioral health services? This internship provides an excellent opportunity for those pursuing careers in social work, public health, or behavioral health to gain real-world experience while supporting individuals in need.

While this is an unpaid position, it offers valuable field experience, professional networking opportunities, and skill-building that will benefit future careers in case management, client advocacy, and behavioral health services. Interns will gain practical experience in client assessment, service planning, and documentation, all while working closely with experienced professionals.

Intern Responsibilities

The Case Management Intern will assist in various client-centered support services, assessment activities, and program operations, including:

Case Management Support

· Work under supervision to assist with case management services

· Maintain ongoing communication with clients and treatment providers to ensure continuity of care

· Track and monitor clients receiving funding from FFDA to ensure they remain connected to care

Assessment and Service Planning

· Shadow a case manager to gain firsthand experience in client intake, assessment, and service planning

· Learn and apply ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria to determine appropriate levels of care

· Schedule and conduct level-of-care assessments under supervision

· Develop, update, and maintain service plans for clients who accept case management

Electronic Health Records Management

· Document client interactions, assessments, and case management activities using CPR-Web and PA-WITS systems

· Ensure all client documentation is complete, accurate, up-to-date, and submitted in a timely manner

Collaboration and Teamwork

· Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure smooth department operations

· Participate in case reviews and staff meetings as needed

· Communicate effectively with FFDA staff, clients, providers, and other key stakeholders

Professional Development

· Gain insight into the drug and alcohol treatment field, funding processes, and client advocacy

· Develop skills in case management, documentation, and client engagement

· Receive supervision from the Deputy Administrator and mentorship from an experienced case manager

Qualifications and Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate is a motivated, compassionate, and detail-oriented master’s-level student eager to gain experience in case management and behavioral health services.

Minimum Qualifications

· Currently enrolled in a master’s program in social work, public health, psychology, sociology, counseling, or a related field

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with comfort in engaging with diverse populations

· Interest in substance use treatment, case management, and client advocacy

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and work within ethical guidelines

· Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic health record systems

Preferred but Not Required

· Experience in case management, client services, or behavioral health settings

· Familiarity with ASAM criteria, substance use treatment models, or harm reduction principles

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Additional Requirements

· Background Checks: All interns must go through the full county clearance process, which includes checks required for individuals working with children

· Internship Capacity: Only one intern will be accepted at a time
