Compensation:
$19.95/hr; Solid nutrition knowledge foundation. Development and personal growth opportunities; training in customer service, management, building recipes, and food service.
Employment:
- Hours: Approximately 10-13 hours/week; max of 20 hrs/week.
- Seeking a student with afternoon availability Monday-Friday; some evening and weekend hours.
- Appointment is on a semester basis; qualified candidates who perform as expected will be considered for renewal for additional semester(s).

Position Description:
Overview:
The Food Demonstration Lab in the Student Wellness Center offers an opportunity for hands-on learning in nutrition and cooking basics. In order to maximize the reach of this resource, we are looking for a student assistant to assist in managing the components of the demonstrations, as well as bridge our nutrition-centered educational efforts through various initiatives in the food demonstration lab.
Duties:
- Develop nutritious and budget-friendly recipes for all students during CHEW classes
- Assist in the creation and design of scripts, recipe cards, supply lists, and fliers for CHEW
- Manage CHEW website and reservations for the Demo Lab
- Promote CHEW through various outreach and tabling events
- Organize CHEW classes from start to finish (prep, set up, clean up)
- Assist in instructing CHEW classes while demonstrating various cooking techniques
- Work professionally and collaboratively with student volunteers, peer health educators, SJSU campus organizations, and professional staff within Health Services as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Nutrition students preferred, but all majors considered
- Knowledge and skill in nutrition/cooking
- Required classes (passing with a B or better): NuFS 8 & NuFS 106A (or equivalent courses).
- Preferred classes (passing with a B or better): NuFS 21 (or equivalent course) , NuFS 111
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to be a team player.
- Exceptional organizational skills: Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and plan & take initiative to organize work projects to meet established deadlines.
- ServSafe Certified/Food Handler Certification or willingness to complete training once hired.
- Understanding and appreciation of the rich diversity of cultures and identities that helps define SJSU.
- Competency using computers to accurately log data and complete projects (Word, Excel, Google Docs), and support media outreach.
- Must be enrolled in at least six units and be in good academic (minimum GPA is 2.75) and judicial standing with SJSU.
