Insect Trapper (seasonal)

Job Description 

Want to help protect Utah agriculture? The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) Insect Program detects and monitors exotic insect pests that are agriculturally significant. The program is seeking qualified candidates to place, service and retrieve insect traps along the Wasatch Front. 

This is an exciting entry-level job opportunity that is ideal for students wanting to secure life science or natural resource careers after graduation! Past employees have gone on to full-time careers at USDA APHIS, USDA NRCS, Utah DNR, Utah GRC, Salt Lake City Urban Forestry and UDAF.

Trappers report to work Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. This position begins in early May and ends in mid-October. The work location is based in West Valley City (Salt Lake County).

Recent college graduates and students still in school are encouraged to apply.  For those still in school, the employer may accommodate a fall semester school schedule by allowing employees to reduce hours or end their employment early. However, the employer cannot accommodate a summer semester school schedule that conflicts with the normal work days/hours.

Example of Duties 

  • Driving to preselected locations and placement of insect traps.
  • Using electronic app-based maps.
  • Recording placement, servicing and retrieval of traps in a GPS device.
  • Seeking verbal permission to place traps on private property.
  • Safely operating a vehicle.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Friendly with the public.
  • Ability to physically walk, bend, reach, crouch and lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Ability to work with insects.

Supplemental Information

Significant portions of this job involve driving and being outdoors. Qualified candidates must be able to perform physical activity in a recurring manner for long periods of time. The sometimes involves working in inclement weather, including but not limited to: rain, snow, hail and extremes in cold and heat.
