Health Information Specialist

Office of Public Safety Administration (OPSA)

Medical Section

 

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $73,800 annually

Under supervision, coordinates the organization, management and exchange of health care data to ensure compliance with applicable requirements and laws; and performs related duties as required

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

·         Participates in the implementation, migration and enhancement of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to support   department clinical operations

·         Creates health record indexes or storage and retrieval systems to collect, classify, store and analyze patient information

·         Identifies and resolves issues relating to the maintenance, storage or retrieval of medical records

·         Compiles, codes, indexes, checks and analyzes patient medical records for quality control and data integrity

·         Provides data for research or cost control and care improvement efforts in a manner consistent with medical, administrative,   ethical, legal and regulatory requirements of the health care system

·         Provides training and technical support to EMR system users

·         Consults with medical personnel to ensure complete and accurate medical records

·         Ensures medical records are in compliance with OSHA and other relevant laws

·         Responds to medical record requests, medical grievance reports, and legal requests

·         Trains staff in health information systems and software maintenance procedures

·         Manages the department’s health information portal by updating and managing datasets for online publishing

·         Receives and responds to medical records requests

·         Maintains computerized and manual records and files and prepares reports to ensure compliance with federal and state   regulations

·         Functions as the health information liaison, participating in various committees, work groups, and advisory counsels

·         Prepares reports and provides information to senior staff for inclusion in research and grant proposal and performance   matrices

Location:       OPSA Medical Section – 3510 S Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60653

Days:              Monday - Friday

Hours:            9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·       Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Informatics, Health Information Management, or a directly related field, plus two years (2) of work experience in health care, health informatics or medical records keeping, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience provided that the minimum degree requirement is met.

 

 

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview.  The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing any of the following:

·      Preference will be given to those with a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Certification

·         Experience with Occupational Health Recordkeeping

·         Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Informatics, Health Information Management, Epidemiology or a directly related field
