Accounting Manager

The City of Lansing is seeking an Accounting Manager within the Finance Department. This position will perform supervisory activities for the City, including the operational activities necessary to maintain and close the City’s books and prepare financial statements. The ideal candidate will possesses knowledge in governmental accounting principles, Comprehensive Annual Financial Report preparation, internal controls, financial management practices, financial computer systems, coordinating financial audits, and preparing complex reports and budgets. IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Financial Administration, or related field; AND   
  • Five (5) years of related professional experience, to include supervisory experience.
  • CPA & fund accounting, and state & federal grant accounting experience, preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, may be considered.
  • Overtime may be required during the preparation of W-2’s, 1099’s fiscal year end close, annual budget, and at other times as needed.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO   

  • Reviews and supervises the work of subordinates.
  • Certifies funds for City contracts in accordance with City policy.
  • Researches, develops and implements all changes to the City’s accounting system procedures and policies in conjunction with the Finance Director.
  • Coordinates risk management with departments and insurance agents, in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office.
  • Coordinates the annual financial audit and acts as operational contact with external auditors.
  • Oversees payroll and pension reporting functions.
  • Prepares divisional budget based on broad guidelines established by the Finance Director.
