OVERVIEW:  

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds independent legal aid offices nationwide. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. 

This LSC’s Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) functions as LSC’s development department. OIA manages LSC’s privately funded initiatives and spearheads private fundraising efforts. Please note that the Office of Institutional Advancement does not manage projects funded by LSC’s congressional appropriations and does not perform any legal duties. 

This position is based in Washington, DC, and will require working from an office in DC in accordance with LSC’s hybrid work model. The successful candidate must live in the DC metropolitan area for the duration of the internship.

BASIC FUNCTION:  

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to: 

  1. Increase proficiency in specific fundraising disciplines, such as finance management, grant research, marketing, and event coordination.
  2. Observe and participate in fundraising operations and decision-making.
  3. Learn the basics of non-profit project development.

The intern's hours will be 15 hours per week. The internship will run approximately from mid-May to August of 2025.

 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The intern's principal duties and responsibilities include: 

  1. Research and prepare summaries of relevant foundation grant opportunities.
  2. Prepare and send acknowledgement letters and maintain records of LSC donations in Excel and Salesforce.
  3. Perform regular maintenance of information contained in Salesforce.
  4. Track information and data on current privately funded projects.
  5. Support the development of LSC’s Leaders Council and Emerging Leaders Council through research, logistics, and planning.
  6. Assist with special projects related to LSC’s Rural Summer Legal Corps.
  7. Attend portions of LSC’s July Board Meeting on Zoom.
  8. Perform general administrative tasks.

 

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

General: 

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate, graduate, and law students, as well as recent graduates of post-secondary institutions. The ideal applicant will be dependable, self-motivated, professional, hard-working, disciplined, and demonstrate integrity. The intern will have excellent research and analytical skills, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be attentive to details and organized, and able to work both independently and on a team. The intern will also exercise good judgment and be an effective problem-solver, intellectually curious, and committed to LSC's mission to promote equal access to justice. 

Technical/Specialized: 

A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required. Salesforce experience preferred but not required.

 

 

HOURLY RATE: 

This position is paid on an hourly basis in accordance with the following rate schedule: 

  • Currently Enrolled Undergraduate Student – $20/hour
  • Recent Undergraduate Graduate – $21/hour
  • Graduate-Level Student and Beyond – $22/hour
