Position Title: Firefighter/Paramedic

Barberton Fire Department is currently hiring for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.

All candidates must complete the FireTEAM through National Testing Network and the Firefighter Physical Agility by April 27, 2025. Candidates are required to complete and upload the following documents.

Salary Information: $61,002.24 - $75,878.40; Salary dependent on certifications and full-time experience.

Age:
Must be eighteen (18) years at time of examination. No applicant shall receive an appointment if that applicant has reached the age of forty-one (41) years at the time of appointment.

Probation:
Firefighter/Paramedic candidates must successfully complete a one-year probationary period.

Licensure:
Licensure State of Ohio Paramedic certification is required by time of hire; must maintain State of Ohio EMT and Paramedic certification during employment.

Nature of Work:
Protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical service, rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention and public education. Maintain equipment apparatus and facilities.

Physical Agility Testing:
TWO PARTS REQUIRED:

PART 1: Firefighter Physical Agility Test – Must meet time of five (5) minutes or less. Applicants must pre-register with the testing facility and pay for hte agility test. Applicants should visit the webpage of hte facility listed for complete information regarding the agility testing. Three testing dates are being offered.

A Certificate of Completion for the Firefighter Physical Agility Test must be received by April 30, 2025 and dated after April 30, 2024 and before April 30, 2025. Upload certificate or email to mwolfe@cityofbarberton.com.

PART 2: Aerial Ladder Climb TestWaiver & Release Form is required to participate. Upload completed form to NTN or email mwolfe@cityofbarberton.com by April 11, 2025. 

Candidates are required to successfully climb a 100 ft. aerial ladder to be eligible for hire.

Physical:
Applicant must, at the time of initial employment and thereafter, abstain from the use of all tobacco products. Applicant must meet and maintain physical fitness and medical standards in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Barberton Fire Department. Visual acuity must be correctable to at least 20/20 and have normal color vision. Hearing must be normal.

Other:
Due to the nature and conditions of the work and position, a criminal conviction record may disqualify you for employment.

Testing:
In addition to a written Civil Service test, applicants will be subject to an extensive background check, physical agility tests, oral interview, psychological examination, comprehensive physical examination, polygraph examination and such other examinations relative to the position. Additional credit for those who pass the written test, with a minimum raw score of 70%, is available up to a maximum of 25 percent (25%). (See “Extra Credit”) If candidate terminates employment during probation of his/her own volition, he/she will be required to reimburse the City of Barberton the cost of all tests and training.

Extra Credit Available (25% Maximum):
Extra credit will only be applied to the scores of those candidates who successfully pass and complete the written examination and physical agility tests (Parts 1 and 2).

 

MILITARY CREDIT:

20%     An Applicant who has completed service in the Uniform Services, who has been honorably discharged from the Uniform Services or transferred to the Reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is a resident of this state and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than one hundred eighty (180) days of active duty service pursuant to an Executive Order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress may file a Certificate of Service or honorable discharge shall receive a credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade.  A person who receives an additional credit under this Section shall not receive an additional credit pursuant to Rule VI, Section (7)(b) of the City of Barberton Civil Service Rules, Regulations, and Procedures. Form DD214 is required.

RESERVE COMPONENT OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES: 

15%     An applicant in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person's total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade. Required DD Form 214.

 RESIDENCY CREDIT:

5%           Five percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who can demonstrate residency within the corporate limits of the City of Barberton for a period of one year prior to the date of application receipt. A signed affidavit will be accepted as proof of residency.  Residency must be established at least 1 year prior to date of application. See attached Residency Affidavit for definition. The Residency Affidavit must be signed and notarized by a State of Ohio Notary Public or military notary.  A notary public will be available in the Civil Service Office for your convenience (no charge).

 PRIOR CITY EMPLOYMENT CREDIT:

0.1           1/10 (One Tenth) of a point will be given to those who pass the Civil Service test for each month of prior work experience with the City of Barberton.   Prior employment will be verified by the City. IT IS THE APPLICANT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION OF PRIOR CITY OF BARBERTON EMPLOYMENT SERVICE.

EDUCATIONAL CREDIT:

10%         BACHELOR’S DEGREE - Ten percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who have                                    completed and possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science Technology or related field from an accredited                   college or university.

 5%          ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE - Five percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who have completed and possess an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field from an accredited college or university.

 15%       N.F.P.A. LEVEL II FIREFIGHTER – Fifteen percent credit to those who are certified in the State of Ohio as an N.F.P.A. Level II Firefighter.

 5%          FOUR CITIES COMPACT FIRE/EMT PROGRAM – Five percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who have graduated within three years before Civil Service test year.
