ABOUT WHAT WE DO
Arts + Public Life, an initiative of the University of Chicago, provides platforms for artists and access to arts programming through residencies, arts education, creative entrepreneurship, and artist-led programs and exhibitions on the South Side of Chicago. Established in 2011, Arts + Public Life advances a robust, collaborative, and evolving relationship between the University of Chicago and the South Side’s vibrant civic, cultural, artistic, and entrepreneurial communities.
HOW WE DO IT
Artistic Growth: Provide platforms for local artists to practice, develop, and showcase their artistic pursuits through programs and events.
Arts Education: Cultivate diverse arts and culture leaders from our local communities, with the long-term goal of reducing persistent inequalities of cultural representation and economic opportunity.
Creative Entrepreneurship: Contribute to the economic vitality of Washington Park and its neighboring South Side communities by creating employment opportunities for local artists, workers, and youth through programming and projects.
Stewardship: Model and cultivate a sense of care for our physical, social, and creative community by providing access to resources to local and community-driven groups and organizations.
WHERE THIS WORK HAPPENS
Arts + Public Life operates on the Arts Block, a vibrant collection of cultural and commercial spaces along Garfield Boulevard between Prairie Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Washington Park.
