Director of Operations 

Salary range: $110,000 – $120,000, commensurate with experience

Mothers for Justice and Equality (MJE) is a national nonprofit committed to empowering mothers to eradicate violence in their communities. With a vision of a world where no mother grieves the loss of a child to violence, MJE provides leadership development, advocacy training, and direct support to transform grief into action. Since its founding, MJE has grown into a national movement, with $3.5 million in annual revenue and $5 million in assets, amplifying the voices of those most impacted by violence and systemic inequities. 

 

Position Summary 

 The Director of Operations (DOO) is a key leadership role responsible for managing the organization’s daily operations, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and long-term sustainability. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the DOO will oversee financial management, human resources, facilities, and organizational processes to strengthen MJE’s impact. This is a high-level position for a strategic and hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

What You Will Do  

Organizational Leadership & Strategy 

  • Develop and implement operational strategies that align with MJE’s mission and growth objectives. 
  • Oversee the daily operations of the organization, ensuring seamless execution of programs and initiatives. 
  • Strengthen internal systems, processes, and policies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. 

Financial & Compliance Oversight 

  • Work closely with the CEO and finance team to develop and manage budgets, oversee financial reporting, and ensure fiscal responsibility. 
  • Maintain strong financial controls, including oversight of contracts, grants, and revenue streams. 
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit governance, employment laws, and regulatory requirements. 

Human Resources & Talent Development 

  • Lead HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, and staff development. 
  • Cultivate a high-performance workplace culture that supports professional growth and employee well-being. 
  • Oversee employee benefits, compensation structures, and workplace policies. 

Operations & Facilities Management 

  • Oversee the management of MJE’s physical office space to ensure a productive and safe work environment. 
  • Ensure operational support for MJE’s programs, events, and national initiatives. 
  • Implement systems to track and measure organizational performance and impact. 

Board & Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Serve as a key liaison between staff, leadership, and the board of directors. 
  • Prepare reports, materials, and strategic insights for board meetings and decision-making. 
  • Cultivate relationships with funders, community partners, and external stakeholders. 

 

Candidate Requirements  

  • Education: Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field required. 
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in nonprofit operations, financial management, or executive leadership. 
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, oversee compliance, and strengthen organizational systems. 
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience mentoring and developing staff. 
  • Excellent problem-solving, strategic planning, and decision-making abilities. 
  • Experience in scaling nonprofit organizations and managing national initiatives is a plus. 
  • Passion for MJE’s mission and a deep understanding of community-based advocacy. 

 

Compensation & Benefits 

Salary range: $110,000 – $120,000, based on experience.

Schedule   

Monday to Friday   

  

 Ability to Commute/Relocate   

  • In-person work environment at MJE’s Roxbury Boston office, with occasional travel required. 
  • Some commute to our Hyde Park office as needed
