Licensed Veterinary Technician


General Definition of Work:
The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) provides high-quality medical and surgical support to the shelter veterinarian and the overall veterinary team. Assists with the care, treatment and rehabilitation of animals in the shelter and community-owned pets seen in the shelter clinic, including performing medical procedures, administering medications, conducting diagnostics, and monitoring the health of animals. The LVT also supports the shelter’s mission to promote the health and welfare of the animals under its care while adhering to humane and ethical practices.

Essential Functions:
• Assists shelter vet in performing physical exams, diagnostics tests, and medical treatment for shelter and community-owned animals.
• Prepare and monitor animals during surgery and post-operative care.
• Provide preventative vet care and daily monitoring and care of animals housed at the shelter.
• Provides education and post-surgery instructions to clients/public. 
• Works with team to effectively care for animals and improve processes.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: 
• Associate’s Degree in veterinary technology from an accredited program.
Experience:  
• Moderate (one (1) or more years) of experience working as a licensed veterinary technician.
Preferred: 
• Shelter or high-volume clinic setting experience.
• Experience in performing spay/neuter surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and emergency care.


Special Requirements:
 Current and valid State of Michigan licensure as a Veterinary Technician.
 Willingness to work outside of regular office hours for emergency care, outreach, or special events.
 Valid driver’s license in the State of Michigan upon hire.
