Position Summary: 

  • Provides administrative and workflow support for all departments as they pertain to Advocacy and Government Relations

Primary Responsibilities:

To support all affiliate advocacy and government relations efforts, specifically:

  • Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of volunteer events such as advocacy actions (letter writing, text banks, canvasses, etc.) and community education events (teach-ins and workshops). 
  • Builds a ladder of engagement for activists by recruiting them to attend events and communicating with them to provide further opportunities for volunteering. 
  • Conducts community outreach by tabling at events to share information about PPHP’s services and policy priorities. 
  • Identifies community outreach and partnership opportunities, including in under-resourced communities.
  • Conducts research on sexual and reproductive health care policy and legislation. 

Qualifications:

  • Student seeking an associate’s degree or bachelor's degree in Women’s and Gender Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Communications, Black Studies, Queer Studies, Social Work or related field. 
  • Commitment to the mission of Planned Parenthood.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and writing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team with staff and volunteers or independently.  Attention to deadlines and confidentiality with content sensitive material in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Assertive, detail-oriented, and able to manage several projects simultaneously with thorough follow-up.
  • Complete interview, background check, and mandatory training.
  • Spanish proficiency is valued but not required.

Time Commitment

  • Summer: mid-May through mid-August
    • *Complete in-person interview, background check, and mandatory training. Internship Orientation with Advocacy and Government Relations Team will be scheduled before you begin*
  • Minimum Commitment: 3-month commitment (May through August), 12-15 hours per week. 
    • This role is primarily in person, with the option to be based at PPHP’s administrative headquarters in Elmsford, NY or Smithtown, NY. 
    • On days the intern does not have an event to attend, they will be allowed to work from home or remotely. 
    • Transportation to major population centers within the base region is required. 
    • Occasional weekend and evening availability is required.

Compensation

Financial compensation is dependent on available funds and may differ from previous or future internships. Interns may qualify for funding by submitting information about the goals of their internship and submitting the required employment paperwork. PPHP’s senior management team will then vote on whether to approve the position for funding of $15 per hour. Interns are encouraged to obtain college credit for the internship.
