Your role in helping us shape the future:

This is a great opportunity for an early-career journalist who wants a range of experiences at a national digital news outlet. We’re looking for someone to help us launch our new Ideas & Opinions platform, which will elevate content and commentaries that provide perspective, insight and thought leadership around current issues and events.

Primary day-to-day responsibilities will include a mix of researching, reporting and editing about topics related to politics, domestic and foreign policy, health, education, the economy and more. You’ll be responsible for helping to investigate potential topics and guest contributors; researching and fact-checking content; supporting editors with assignments; helping brainstorm new forms of opinion storytelling; helping build a calendar of important global news events; and collaborating across the newsroom on production, audience development and other efforts. The ability to handle multiple short-term and longer-term assignments, while meeting tight deadlines, is key.

Are you up to the challenge?

  1. You love researching, fact-checking, editing and producing commentaries and essays written by leading experts on domestic and foreign politics, education, health, leadership and more for the new Ideas & Opinions section. There may be some opportunities to report or write, depending on the team’s need, but this role is not primarily a reporting role.
  2. You have strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to engage with thought leaders and high-profile writers about structuring and revising their commentaries.
  3. You have strong organizational and administrative skills, to assist with key U.S. News live events and launches, such as the Best Countries or the Best States launch, if they occur during your tenure.
  4. You’re interested in learning and mastering article production through our content management system (CMS).
  5. You’re collaborative, and keen to work with our photo and data teams to illustrate commentaries and create data visualizations.
