Arts and Crafts Director at Summer Camp
The North Star Camp Arts & Crafts Director plays a vital role in enhancing the creativity of our campers. Every week, the Arts & Crafts Director introduces exciting new art projects for campers to explore and enjoy. Some of the previously popular choices have been Funky Fleece Pillows, dreamcatchers, and candles, all of which have been a hit among participants. Moreover, North Star is equipped with a kiln, allowing campers to delve into the world of pottery-making. With such an extensive range of artistic opportunities, the Arts & Crafts Director helps campers spark their imagination and creativity.
Who We Are
North Star Camp is a residential boys summer camp located in Hayward, Wisconsin. Every summer, approximately 300 campers come to the shores of Spider Lake to make new friends, learn new skills, grow as individuals and make memories that last a lifetime. Our incredible staff come from all over the world to create a nurturing and fun environment. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative and hard working to join the team for this summer. Ready to make a difference and have the best summer of your life? We’d love to have you apply!
The Role In A Nutshell
We’re looking for an Arts and Crafts Director to bring creativity and fun to one of our most popular activities – arts and crafts! You’ll want to come up with kid-friendly projects that can be completed over a few hours throughout the week. This role starts June 3 and runs through August 8 at our summer camp in Hayward, Wisconsin. Room and board is included with compensation.
A Typical Day (even though there’s no such thing as a typical day at camp…)
- Wake up and grab breakfast with some of the other out-of-cabin staff. You brainstorm with some friends what skit you want to perform at the Staff Show later that evening.
- After breakfast, head to the Arm & Hammer (what we call the Arts and Crafts center) to prepare for First Period, where the campers will be making Funky Fleece Pillows.
- The First Period bell rings and 10 excited campers come to the Arm & Hammer. You help them pick out the materials they need for the project and then show them how to make the Funky Fleece Pillows. About 10 minutes before the period ends, you’ll help them with cleanup and putting away supplies.
- During Second Period, some of our older campers have signed up to do pottery. Some are sculpting their clay, while others need some help working the kiln. You roam around offering a hand as needed.
- The lunch bell rings, so you head back to the Lodge to grab some chicken nuggets and pasta salad. You sit with some of the office staff and catch up on the morning.
- During lunch announcements, our campers are going to sign up for the next week’s activities and it’s always a good time to show off the upcoming Arts & Crafts projects. You show off some dreamcatchers and Froot Loop candles that are next week’s options.
- After lunch, it’s Rest Period for the campers – you grab a book and take in the beautiful day near the lake.
- Third Period comes around and it’s a rare period off. But one of the Camp Directors asked you to create the cover page for a Friday Night Service, so you grab some paper and pencils to sketch out a drawing for that week’s theme.
- During Fourth Period, you take some time to go through inventory to make sure we have enough supplies for the next week’s projects. It looks like we’re running low on paint and UN Day is coming up, so you place an order of paint to arrive in time.
- Fifth Period brings Organized Free, which is often a free period for campers to come work on finishing their projects. You’ll be in the Arm & Hammer offering them support throughout the period, bouncing around from one camper to the next.
- It’s dinner time! BBQ Chicken and Martha’s Cinnamon Bread – your favorite meal at camp.
- Evening program is an All-Camp Campfire. You head to the Council Ring and make sure you find a good spot to listen to some stories. During the counselor chorus, you head up to sing a camp favorite with some other staff members.
- You have a little down time while the campers are being put to bed by their counselors, but you want to see what that night’s staff snack is so you head to the Lodge. There’s a bunch of people playing Spoons, so you join in for an evening of fun and laughter.
This Job Might Be For You If:
- You love channeling your inner Picasso. Whether it’s painting, pottery, crafting or designing, you’re a creative soul who wants to share your love of arts and crafts with the younger generation.
- You like thinking outside the box. Sure, we have our arts & crafts classics at camp but perhaps you’ve done a project that you think the kids would enjoy. We’d love to have you give it a try and infuse some new ideas into our popular program area.
- You’re super organized. The Arm & Hammer can quickly look like a disaster zone if supplies aren’t put away properly and projects aren’t cleaned up when the period is over. So we’re looking for someone who gives the campers space to be creative, but also keeps the Arm & Hammer clean for the next group to use.
- You’re a team player. You’ll have some counselors who are on your staff, so you’ll want to develop relationships and provide them guidance to keep the arts & crafts program running smoothly. There will also be times when we need you to help out with other activities around camp that don’t revolve around arts & crafts – like offering a hand with a project in the office or kitchen.
- You’re a planner. Each week, you’ll want to show off the next week’s arts & craft projects to create excitement for your program and garner more activity sign ups. We also go through a lot of materials each summer for our arts & crafts program, so you’ll want to constantly be taking inventory and ordering more supplies if we’re running low.
