Summer Camp Health Center Assistant / LPN
Salary $7,000 (June 22, 2025 - August 1, 2025)
General Responsibilities - To be the Health Center Assistant Nurse for Star Lake camp; supervise health and cleanliness standards; work with the Health Center Manager/Registered Nurse, Camp Director and staff; and help provide adequate physical health conditions for all.
1. Involvement in the total camp program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including dining room, campfire programs, children with problems, evening programs, etc.
2. Promote observance of the spiritual emphasis of the program and the moral and ethical code affecting campers and staff.
3. Attend and contribute at staff meetings.
4. Responsible for sharing with the Camp Directors all matters of concern relating to the total welfare of the camp
5. Responsible to observe set curfew.
Minimum Qualifications
• A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to share your faith with others
• Current RN license to participate in New Jersey or be able to secure a New Jersey license for the summer season. May also be a licensed LPN
• Current CPR and first aid certifications
• Desire to work and live in a camp community
• Ability to originate, update, and /or monitor health care, maintain records, and implement the health care plan
• Experience with children and young adults desirable
• Self-motivated, responsible an independent worker, and organized
• Ability to relate to one’s peer group
• Ability to accept supervision
• Good character, integrity, and adaptability
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
Specific Responsibilities
1. To work with the Health Center Manager/Registered Nurse to ensure that each staff member and camper has on file a Health history and examination form, as required.
2. Follow appropriate medial routines including recordkeeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders.
3. Help set up system for health screening for arriving campers and staff.
4. During Full Staff Development help to discuss health and safety, procedures, precautions, and routines with staff.
5. Assist in the coverage of the Star Lake Camp Health Center.
6. Help to supervise the Office Manager.
7. Coordinate hospital and clinic runs as necessary, making sure that proper forms and supervision is completed.
8. Communicate with parents any concerns related to the health and welfare of their child.
9. Make appointments, when necessary, with medical/dental personnel in the community.
10. Assist in guiding counselors about their responsibilities in noting and reporting food allergies, illness, injury or unsafe practices and conditions that might contribute to camper or staff accidents. In addition, in reporting campers’ dietary habits as failure to eat a variety of foods, any symptoms of disturbance such as restless sleep, nail biting, thumb sucking, bed-wetting, withdrawal or homesickness.
11. Establish special times of the day for "sick call".
12. Keep current inventory of stock in Health Center, ordering additional supplies as needed.
13. Be responsible for any drugs, and medicines brought to camp by campers and staff, and to ensure their proper use as directed by physician of the camper (according to prescription).
14. Administer all medications and treatment according to physician's order and keep records of all such treatment in a bound record book.
15. Keep current inventory of stock in Health Center, ordering additional supplies as needed.
16. Prepare “portable first aid kits” kits for all staff members who are responsible for campers. Also, set up first aid kits for each program area, offices, and dining hall, vehicles, and for emergency uses such as hikes, and overnight camping trips.
17. Instruct staff in current first aid methods and emergency procedures and review written procedures.
18. Check kitchen and dining area, living quarters and camp areas generally for health and safety conditions. Often check the health of kitchen and dining room personnel.
19. Monitor unhealthy environmental conditions (heat, etc.) and communicate action plan to staff.
20. In addition to the closing evaluation, prepare a written report to include:
a. Equipment inventory requisition for next summer.
b. Treatment records of campers and staff.
c. Infirmary and hospital admission.
d. Visits to M.D. and general recommendations.
Additional Responsibilities
1. Aid and support to all program areas as assigned.
2. Assist with the registration and departure of campers.
3. Attend and participate in weekly leadership staff meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
1. Clean living area daily.
2. Work as a team player.
3. Committed to the development of campers spiritually, physically, educationally, emotionally, and socially.
4. Willing to work with all staff members regardless of their positions
5. Maintain a high level of interaction with campers and staff.
6. Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Star Lake Camp family.
7. Pray that each camper comes to know Christ as Savior.
8. Attend weekly staff Bible studies. These take place one evening per session.
9. Attend Sunday morning staff worship.
10. Voice criticisms to the Camp Director first.
11. Be in accord with camp aims and policies, being loyal to camp always.
12. Assist where needed for the benefit of the campers and the smooth operation of the camp.
13. Respond positively to the direction of the Program Director when he/she makes schedule changes.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Ability to participate fully in the total camp program*
2. Ability to communicate and work with groups of various ages and skills levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers and/or staff.
3. Physical ability to respond appropriately and quickly to situations requiring first aid.
4. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities that achieve camper development objectives.
5. Ability to identify and respond to hazards. Must be able to assist campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
6. Respond immediately to assigned area in the event of a missing camper alarm.
- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.
*Please note that full participation means that although you may not have an assigned responsibility you are required to attend and participate in the various daily programs of camp, such as evening programs, camper worship, cabin devotions, etc…
