Communications Associate
Bemis Center seeks a creative and detail-oriented Communications Associate to craft compelling stories, elevate awareness of Bemis’s programs, and engage diverse audiences across digital and print platforms. A skilled writer and graphic designer, the Communications Associate is passionate about contemporary art and digital media, eager to develop dynamic content that amplifies Bemis’s mission. Working collaboratively within the communications team, this role ensures brand consistency, fosters community engagement, and strengthens Bemis’s voice across all audience touchpoints.

Responsibilities
>Primary responsibilities include
the creation of branded materials and maintenance of Bemis’s digital platforms, encompassing both graphic design and writing/proofreading tasks
>Content development:
Plan and execute a digital content calendar, including social media, email, and SMS marketing campaigns
>Platform management:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date information on Bemis’s website, social media pages, and other digital platforms
>Content capture & editing:
Prepare shot lists, take photo/video at Bemis Center events for use in multimedia projects, and maintain a well-organized photo and video archive
>Visitor experience:
Be knowledgeable and prepared to effectively communicate Bemis’s history, mission, and core programs, introduce current exhibitions and/or programs, and provide information about upcoming activities and how guests can get involved and support our work; support the delivery of a meaningful and valuable experience by designing clear wayfinding/signage and compelling on-site digital and print collateral
>Project management:
Support department-wide projects by drafting project plans and maintaining task calendars
>Audience management:
Conduct routine maintenance and cleanup of email and mailing lists
>Reporting:
Collect and organize data to furnish clear and useful information to measure success and guide future marketing efforts
>Brand management:
Ensure that consistent brand identity and style are maintained throughout all communications
>Strategic input:
Keep up-to-date on digital platforms and industry trends; introduce strategies to keep Bemis Center’s social media channels responsive, innovative, collaborative, and engaging
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, graphic design, or a related field
- Minimum of two years experience as a communications or related professional, preferably in the context of a small-to-medium-size arts organization or other nonprofit organization
- Exceptional written communication skills with superior grammar and spelling, including the ability to produce compelling and concise copy for online media (experience with the Chicago Manual of Style preferred)
- Outstanding verbal communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, such as strategic partners, media, and the public
- Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat), social media platforms, and digital communication tools required (experience with Craft CMS and Mailchimp preferred)
- Knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization) and online analytic tools
- Must be able to respond to fast-paced social media environments and to evolving conversations online in real-time
- Photography and intermediate-level video production/editing skills
- Strong organizational skills and impeccable attention to detail
- Creative and strategic thinker with the capacity to take initiative and to work independently and as a team player in a fun, yet demanding arts organization
- Ability to have a flexible work schedule—along with other members of the communications team, the Communications Associate will typically work 5–6 hours per week welcoming visitors during public hours, occasionally on evenings and weekends
- Understand and promote Bemis Center’s mission in a clear, spirited manner
- A successful reference and criminal background check is required
Working Conditions
- Office-based role with standard hours, typically Monday to Friday
- Some evenings and weekends are required for public programs and special events
- May involve some physical activity, such as lifting boxes or setting up for events
