About the William P. Blalock Fellowship
The Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) and East Lake Golf Club (ELGC) have partnered to create the William P. Blalock Fellowship, a unique employment opportunity where fellows will receive a 360-degree view of the golf industry while working alongside and supporting multiple golf companies and organizations.
The fellowship is named in honor of Georgia Golf Hall of Fame member William P. (Bill) Blalock, a past president of the GSGA and GSGA Foundation, and long-standing member of East Lake Golf Club. His legacy extends beyond his remarkable skills as a player as he is a true ambassador of golf, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on golf in Georgia.
Fellowship Activities
This 12-week fellowship will run from May 15 through August 15 (start/end dates are flexible) and will include six (6) different experiences, each approximately two weeks, with several Atlanta-based golf companies and organizations including Georgia State Golf Association, Georgia Section of the PGA of America, Bobby Jones Links, East Lake Golf Club, PGA TOUR Superstore, and TOUR Championship.
The fellowship seeks to provide motivated individuals who aspire to explore a career in the golf industry. Experiences in the following areas are planned: golf operations, merchandising and retail, association and event management, agronomy and golf course maintenance, marketing and communications, sponsorships and business development, and organizational governance. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn from some of the very best in the golf industry while being exposed to various business practices and processes in a fast-paced, real-world environment.
Fellows will receive an orientation and on-site training from each company/organization. Fellows will be included in the planning and execution of several different events and activities which will inform and showcase various aspects of the industry from a golf organization and facility perspective.
Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities
- Prior experience and knowledge with the game of golf is preferred.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in written formats, and in interactions with others.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to multi-task are of high importance.
- Ability to apply logical thinking and problem-solving skills to carry out duties.
Work Environment
- Must work both independently as well as part of a team environment.
- May be required to work early mornings and long days as needed.
- Additional hours on weekends may be requested to provide the fellow with the ability to experience certain events and activities.
- This position will rotate between multiple office locations based on the respective organization/company with which the fellow is assisting at that time per the schedule provided to the fellow in advance of the fellowship. The fellow should plan to physically be present in that respective office during pre-arranged hours of unless traveling to a different location for business purposes.
Physical Demands
- Routinely works in an outside golf course environment spending multiple hours a day in various weather conditions.
- Frequently works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone, printer/copier, and other office equipment as needed to perform duties.
- This may include prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May be required to travel throughout the state of Georgia. Approximate travel is 20- 25 days.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Mental Demands
- Regularly required to use written and oral communication skills with various audiences.
- Required to read and interpret data, information, and documents.
- Perform highly detailed work under deadlines.
Compensation and Benefits
- This position will be employed by the Georgia State Golf Association throughout the duration of the fellowship.
- This position pays $12.50/hour plus overtime pursuant to the GSGA Employee Handbook. Interns should expect to average 40-50 hours per week.
- Mileage reimbursement will be provided for use of personal vehicle on company business.
- Travel expenses (e.g., meals, lodging, etc.) will be covered when traveling for company business.
- Organization logo apparel may be provided.
