JOB DESCRIPTION
 

 

JOB TITLE:  School Counselor 

 

REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Pupil Services

 

Terms of Employment:  184 day Teacher work calendar with extended service.

Purpose Statement:  To implement a comprehensive school counseling plan that includes academic, career, and social/emotional development. To design a well-rounded model that ensures developmental, preventative, and responsive services.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Two years experience in education or a related field.
  • Appropriate state licensure.
  • Knowledge and experience in multi-tiered systems of support.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge and background in research-based academic and behavioral interventions.
  • Knowledge in effective counseling models and practices.
  • FBI and BCI background check with a clear record.

 

Essential Duties:

 

Development & Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program:

 

  • Plan, organize, and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program (80% or more of the time isutilized for guidance curriculum, individual student planning, and preventive & responsive services with less than 20% spent on program management, system support, and accountability).
  • Work collaboratively to develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program using Ohio School Counseling Standards and current individual school data.
  • Communicate the goals of the school counseling program to education stakeholders.
  • Use data to develop comprehensive programming to meet student needs.

 

Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program:

 

Curriculum:

 

  • Collaborates with other stakeholders to integrate a school-wide social-emotional curriculum.
  • Deliver and implement guidance/counseling/social-emotional curriculum, chosen by the district, using effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured classroom lessons and small group sessions.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school & district goals.
  • Incorporate into the counseling program the life skills students need to be successful in the twenty-first century.

 

Individual Student Planning:

 

  • Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans.
  • Conduct individual student planning by guiding individuals and groups of students and their parents through the development of education and career plans.
  • Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data. 
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
  • Work with teams to develop individualized education programs, section 504 plans, and success plans.

 

Preventive and Responsive Services:

 

  • Conduct individual and small group counseling, consultation and referral for students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Provide responsive services through the effective use of individual and small group counseling, consultation and referral skills.
  • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process.
  • Collect data and maintain records on the number of referrals, who is referred, reason for the referral, and outcome of the referral.
  • Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Collects data and maintain records on outcome results for each individual and group counseling service.

 

System Support:

 

  • Provide appropriate information to school personnel related to the school counseling program.
  • Assist teachers, parents/guardians/and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the profession.

 

Accountability:

 

  • Conduct yearly program audit to review program implementation and effectiveness.
  • Collect and analyze data to guide program direction, emphasis, and outcome effectiveness.
  • Measure results of programming activities and share results with stakeholders.
  • Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance,  and as required or appropriate, develop success plans and facilitate appropriate interventions.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist students new to the school with scheduling and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
  • Review records of incoming students and alert staff of any useful information.
  •  Maintain appropriate student records, review and interpret records and maintain confidentiality.
  • Duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Pupil Services.
