Seasonal Animal Care Technicians

City Wildlife seeks two animal care technicians for part-time help, 32 hours per week May –September.  Prior experience in wildlife rehabilitation is helpful but not mandatory. Pay is minimum wage. Some weekend and holiday hours are required.

The only wildlife rehabilitation center in Washington, D.C., City Wildlife is located at 15 Oglethorpe Street, NW, and is open every day of the year. The center admits between 1,500 and 2,000 animals a year. We treat local wildlife including invasive species such as Rock Pigeons, House Sparrows, and European Starlings but do not work with rabies vector species.  

Applicants must be:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and work in a variety of conditions with variable hours indoors and outdoors.
  • Mature, reliable, and responsible individuals.
  • Work both independently and as part of a group.
  • Able to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations and a demanding workload.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities including lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, standing, squatting, and bending.

Job description:

The animal care technicians are responsible for implementing City Wildlife’s animal care program in accords with the mission of the organization. They report to the animal care manager. Due to the nature of wildlife rehabilitation work, animal care technicians are routinely exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; zoonotic or other diseases; allergens; unpleasant noises, odors, and sights.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Lead the shift by delegating tasks, directing workflow, and keeping the team on task.
  • Prepare diets for and feed a wide variety of wild animal patients, including orphaned infants and sick or injured adults
  • Catch and handle songbirds, small mammals, and raptors.
  • Help with animal medications as appropriate and under the supervision of the animal care manager and clinic director.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of animal housing.
  • Provide enrichment opportunities for all animals throughout the week.
  • Help with animal releases when necessary.
  • Help with cleaning and maintenance of the center, including laundry, dishes, sweeping, and mopping. 
  • Assist with training volunteers and interns.
  • Participate in all staff meetings and attend events as necessary.
  • Open and close the center alone and with others.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
