CHCP Spring Student Internship

                                                                                                                                                     

The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) exists to promote, educate, and preserve Chinese and Chinese Americanhistory and culturewith the peopleof Silicon Valley and beyond throughcommunity outreach activities, and running of the Chinese American Historical Museum (CAHM). Our Spring Internship provides experiential learning for college and post-secondary students, while simultaneously advancing CHCP’s mission. Willingness to work Saturdays.

Work Location:San Jose, CA and hybrid

Earliest start date ofthe Internship: March 1, 2025

Latest completion date of the Internship: May 31, 2025 (potential extension through June 30, 2025)

Stipend: $1,000(up to $1,500 dependent on candidate’s experience and work duration)

 

Qualifications:

 Knowledge and/or interestin Santa ClaraValley and ChineseAmerican culture and history

  Willingness to work weekends at the museum

 Ability to engage and connectwith diverse audiencesof all ages and backgrounds

 Helpful skills includeclear oral and written communications, customer relations and reception, marketing and community service

  Ability to work independently or as part of a group, as needed

 Bachelor’s or master’s degreestudent in history,ethnic studies, museumstudies, marketing, communications, and/or education preferred. Computer and digital media literacy, including familiarity with Google Suites and Microsoft Office

  English language fluency, both written and verbal required

  • Knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese are particularly valuable, as are Spanishand Vietnamese

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Complete at least eight shifts as a museum docent on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.
    • Project: Oral History -- Provide technical and logistical support for interviews of persons with lived experience of local Chinese American history, such as by doing background research, formulating interview questions, videotaping, storyboarding, or video editing.

 Serve as a docent, introducing displays and answering questions.

 Attend training regarding the museum and basic localChinese American history.

 Business casual dress and appearance is required during docent work hours.

  Minimum of 10 hours of project work, assisting with one or more of the following:

  • Project: Public Archaeology Program -- assist with events to learn about archaeology and former Chinatowns in San Jose. Prepare simulations and activities. 
  • Project: CHCP Traveling Exhibit -- promote and schedule public venues. Assist with delivery, setup and return of exhibit. Research updated content.
  • Project: Uncovering Asian Experiences -- distribute CHCP video, curriculum, and other ethnic studies material to secondary schools in Santa Clara county.

 Other Project options to be identified.

  Attend at least 1 local educational or cultural field trip or outreach event.

 

Expectations of the Student Intern.In addition to their Job Description, responsibilities include:

 Adhering to the Organization’s policies, procedures and rulesgoverning professional behavior.

 Adhering to the Organization’s policies governing the observation of confidentiality and the handling of confidential or proprietary information.

 Assuming personal and professional responsibilities for his or her actionsand activities.

 Maintaining professional relationships with CHCP and History San Jose (“HSJ”) staff, directors, members, volunteers, guests and so forth.

 Developing a self-awareness regarding attitudes, values,behavior patterns that influences work.

 Being consistent and punctual in the submission of all work assignments to project or program lead(s) and supervisor(s).

 Relating and applying knowledge from academic experiences to the organizational setting.

 Utilizing a courteous, enthusiastic, open-minded, criticalapproach to policies and procedures.

  Providing their Supervisory Coordinator with periodic progressreports.

Organization’s Commitment: It is the responsibility of CHCP to provide direct, on- the-job supervision of the Student Intern which includes the following:

  Orienting the Intern to the Organization’s structure and operations.

 Orienting the Internto the Organization’s policies and procedures regarding appropriate dress, work hours and applicable leave policies.

  Introducing the Intern to the appropriate professional and clerical staff.

  • Providing the Intern with adequate resources necessary to accomplish job objectives.
  • Affording the Intern the opportunity to identify with their supervisor(s) as a professional by jointly participating in interviews, meeting, conferences, projects, and other functions.
  • Supporting the Supervisory Coordinator and Intern if problems should arise that disrupt the Intern’s learning and performance.
