Who We Are
The Department of Public Health and Environment’s Environmental Quality Division (EQ) empowers Denver’s communities to live better, longer by creating and sustaining a healthy environment through science, service, and policy. EQ protects the environment by conducting scientific assessments, regulatory compliance, technical assistance and training, and environmental education for both private sector and city operations. EQ advocates for federal, state, and local environmental policies that protect the environment and public health.
What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive hourly rate commensurate with education. All City and County of Denver emerging talent positions are supported by a trained hiring manager and encouraged to attend up to 4 sessions of professional development each season (Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall).
- The number hours per week is flexible (typically about 15 hours, not to exceed 30 hours), and depends on the intern’s class schedule. Work hours will typically fall between Monday and Friday between 8am and 5pm.
- We welcome individuals who are interested in applying through their school’s Academic Program, to combine a credit-bearing independent study with outside, paid work experience. Students receive real world experience in positions related to their academic major and career goals. Credit hours offered for academic internships varies from school to school.
- This internship is a year-round position and extends through the academic school year.
What You’ll Do
EQ is seeking a part-time intern to support its water quality monitoring and mosquito control programs. The internship will consist of a mix of field work and office work.
As an intern you will get to experience:
Work with Water Quality Project Managers on routine sampling efforts
- Collection of field samples and delivery of samples to analytical laboratories
- Field instrument calibration and equipment decontamination
- Entry and review of data entered into program databases
- Develop program-related content for use on social media
- Research into water quality-related topics as requested by project managers
- Other tasks as needed.
Work with Mosquito Control Program
- Conduct surveillance and larval control as needed
- Equipment preparation and management
- Entry and review of data entered into program databases
- Other tasks as needed
What You’ll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
A junior or senior enrolled in a degree program in Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Geology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related field and have a strong interest in conducting field work and data analysis. Current enrollment must be verified by attaching a recent transcript at the time of application.

- Detail-Oriented
- Able to work independently
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
- Capable of carrying up to 30 pounds
- Coursework or experience with GIS, Statistics, Sample Collection
Minimum Qualifications:
Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or closely related field, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year).
Experience: None
Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
License/Certification Requirement: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Location Flexibility
The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
