Disabilities, Mental Health & Transition Specialist

Head Start of Eastern Orange County, Newburgh, NY is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Disabilities, Mental Health & Transition Specialist to join our team.

The Disabilities, Mental Health & Transition Specialist is responsible for implementing, overseeing, and coordinating services related to children’s disabilities, mental health/social-emotional needs, and transitions within an early childhood education setting. This role requires education & experience in early childhood/childcare setting and involves regular & ongoing support in the preschool classrooms with children who have special needs, including behavioral management. The specialist will collaborate closely with families, staff, and community partners to ensure that each child receives the necessary support for their development and well-being.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing regular & ongoing direct, hands-on support to children with special needs/ behavioral challenges in the classroom, ensuring that necessary accommodation and modifications are implemented to meet their individual needs.

· Working with staff/providers to implement strategies that support children’s behavioral, emotional and developmental needs.

Meeting with families to address mental health concerns, provide support & resources.

  • Facilitating assessments and supporting the development of individualized plans for children.
  • Attending CPSE meetings and advocating/aligning services for children.
  • Managing transitions for children entering, leaving, or moving within the program, ensuring a smooth & supportive process.
  • Ensuring that all services are provided in a holistic manner, supporting the child’s overall development and well-being.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, proactive individual with a strong background, passion for, and extensive experience in, early childhood education, including a deep understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices. They will be hands-on and readily accessible, providing ongoing support to address and meet children’s individual needs, including managing challenging behaviors, while demonstrating the ability to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all children. Additionally, the candidate must align with our policy of no suspensions or expulsions, focusing instead on positive behavior interventions and promoting growth for every child.
