Consumer and Industry Services Internship

 

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Consumer and Industry Services (CIS) Division is seeking an intern for the Summer of 2025 (May 19, 2025 – August 08, 2025). The chosen candidate will spend time with the different regulatory divisions of Consumer and Industry Services. This internship is designed to offer the chosen candidate a full hands-on experience with the regulatory arm of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

   Ellington Agricultural Center

   Holeman Building

   436 Hogan Road, Nashville TN 37220

 

Major Duties by CIS Division:

 

Food and Dairy:

  • Assist Food and Dairy staff with reviewing Retail Food and Food Manufacturing applications.
  • Assist with the facilitation of application review meetings. 
  • Assist office and field staff with change of ownership applications and new owner compliance checks.
  • Visit industry partners with Food and Dairy inspectors during their normal routine inspections of food production facilities.

 

Agriculture Inputs:

  • Visit industry partners with Agriculture Inputs inspectors during their normal routine facility inspections and sampling of agriculture commodities.
  • Shadow an auditor during a routine audit of a grain elevator’s records.
  • Shadow an Off-Target Pesticide Investigator conducting a pesticide drift investigation.
  • Assist Agriculture Input office staff conducting desk audits, issuing ag input licenses, and reviewing grant audits.

 

Plant Certification:

  • Visit Industry partners with inspectors during normal routine inspections of plant growing and production facilities.
  • Shadow the State of Tennessee Plant Pathologist and Entomologist during their daily task.
  • Assist Plant Certification staff with invoicing of yearly permits.

Pesticides:

  • Assist division staff in managing the pesticide label review and updating registered products.
  • Visit industry partners with Middle Tennessee Pesticides Inspectors during their normal routine inspections.
  • Assist the certification and Licensing Supervisor with pesticide certification, and entry of approved trainings and rosters. 

 

Weights and Measures/ Fuel Quality/ Metrology:

  • Shadow in the Johnson Metrology Laboratory to better understand its role in the regulation of measurement across the state.
  • Visit industry partners with fuel quality inspectors during normal routine inspections.

 

Other duties may be assigned based on needs and interest.

 

Education:

  • Applicants must possess a High School Diploma and currently seeking a degree in agriculture, science, or related area of study.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. 

 

Essential Knowledge and Required Skills: 

  • Ideal candidates should have an interest in state regulation and public safety.
  • Ideal candidates must have the ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office is required.
  • Ideal candidates must be comfortable with making and accepting phone calls.
  • General knowledge and understanding of the agriculture industry is preferred but not required.

 

Comments: 

  • This is a paid internship.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • All participants in the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Internship program are required to create a presentation for executive staff detailing their experience with the internship. This presentation shall be given to executive leadership during a luncheon at the end of the internship term.

Working Conditions: 

  • This internship is primarily office-based with the possibility of some travel along with the opportunity to work remotely at times.
