Water Resources Intern

The Water Resources Intern is part of a team that performs various tasks from early detection monitoring of invasive species to water quality monitoring of Carver County lakes and streams. Interns work closely with the Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator and the Water Monitoring team performing technical work to assist in the implementation of both the County's aquatic invasive species prevention program and the water monitoring program. This position involves extensive field work.

Candidates for this position should have the ability to work independently, have excellent problem-solving skills, and enjoy working outside and in variable weather conditions. This person should possess the ability to analyze data, develop reports, and communicate results.  Candidates should also be comfortable interacting with members of the public in a friendly and professional manner. 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

• Identifies aquatic invasive plants and animals

• Assists Water Resources team with various water management activities  

• Performs shoreline and snorkel surveys, plankton tows

• Completes data entry, data analysis, and summary reports

• Public education and outreach

• Collects water samples

• Collects aquatic vegetation data

• Collects hydrology data

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

• High school diploma/GED

• At least 18 years of age

• Course study in biology, natural resources, water resources, environmental science or related field of study

• A Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License

Preferred Qualification:

• Experience operating and trailering small motorized watercrafts, canoes, and kayaks

 

SCORED EXAMINATION PROCESS

All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, and background investigation.
