Conference Assistant On-Call 

Quick Overview: Conference Assistants in the On-Call position will be provided free housing and will be required to live on campus throughout the summer. Conference Assistants On-Call will help serve the IU Indianapolis community and its guests who live or stay on campus throughout the summer. This includes checking guests in and out of the residential facilities, making sure that university and HRL policies are being followed, and helping provide our students and guests with the best experience they can have while staying with us. Summer On-Call Conference Assistant

Hourly Wage: $11.00 an hour

Expected number of hours a week: Minimum of 20 up to 27

Number of Openings and Position Duration: 30 (number may vary depending on the number of returning applicants)

Office Overview

The mission of the Office of Housing and Residence Life is to provide a safe and secure living-learning community that inspires intellectual and personal growth, social responsibility, and multicultural understanding while providing opportunities for leadership development. By acting as a pivotal force in helping and assisting our guests and undergraduate residents, the on-call summer assistant will ensure that each group’s needs are met. This role contains an "on-call" component, which frequently spans weekday and weekend nights. Students are required to live on campus. Housing is provided as compensation. These students are supervised by the summer conference team and the Residence Coordinators in the building.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a summary of the responsibilities of the position. However, they are not meant to be an exhaustive list of tasks and it is expected that the On-Call Conference Assistants complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other members of the management staff of Housing and Residence Life:

  • Work the front desk of the residence hall
  • Serve as "on-call” approximately one to two times a week. Students are assigned a cell phone overnight to assist in any after-hours situations.
  • Provide tours of residence hall showrooms as needed while at front desk
  • Assist summer guests moving in and out
  • Respond to lockouts
  • Prepare rooms for guests (room checks, set linen, etc.)
  • Prepare keys for summer guests
  • Build a positive relationship with summer guests
  • Light cleaning to assist guest moving in
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

· All applicants must be enrolled in Summer 2025 coursework or have been enrolled in Spring 2025 coursework

· Customer-service-oriented students who want to deliver a high-quality housing experience

· Enthusiasm for teamwork with other employees

· Professionalism, which includes arriving to work on time, communicating effectively, and maintaining an overall positive attitude

· Ability to follow oral and written instructions

· Applicants must have wide weekday availability during business hours (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM)

· Applicants must have some evening and weekend availability to work desk shifts

· Applicants must be able to serve on-call (e.g. respond in person to a residence hall concern within 15 minutes) after hours for an average of one to two times per week, including some weekends

· This is a live-on position where community presence is expected. Applicants are expected to primarily reside in University-provided housing and should be prepared to limit overnight time away from campus.

·  Federal Work-Study is not required. However, students eligible for federal work-study may be eligible to receive a portion or all of their compensation from work-study funds.

 

Learning Outcomes

Communicator – Students will improve upon their communication skills through relationship-building with summer residents, guests, prospective students, incoming students, and their co-workers. Students will be more prepared to successfully navigate a workplace environment and deliver a high level of customer service.

 Problem Solver – Students will work with their supervisor and peers to critically think and solve a variety of issues that may arise during the summer. Students will be more prepared to evaluate and effectively resolve issues in the workplace.

 Community Contributor – Students will engage with a variety of different identities including, but not limited to: race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or age. Students will be more prepared to successfully navigate a diverse environment and workplace.

 

Physical Demands

· Ability to move across residential communities for long durations, including when inspecting rooms before and after occupancy.

· Ability to be outdoors during the summer months on some occasions, especially when completing duty rounds or on move-in and move-out days

·  Ability to perform moderate cleaning of some residence hall rooms

· The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation

 Work Environment

·  Summer conference assistants will interact with residents across the campus community. They will also serve at the front desk for specified periods and may be asked to respond to concerns in other on-campus communities.
