
Outdoor Education Program Specialist
Position Summary:
The Outdoor Education Program Specialist is primarily responsible for overseeing, promoting, developing and evaluating outdoor and environmental education programming throughout Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM) communities. This role will report to the Vice President of Outdoor Experience to help develop Outdoor and Environmental Education programs from start to implementation, including management of event logistics and evaluation of each program.
This position provides subject matter expertise and support in the areas of outdoor and environmental education to GSSEM members and community partners - in their participation in and/or delivery of programming opportunities. This position will rely heavily on networking and communication skills, as well as a positive customer service experience for GSSEM members and community partners.
The Outdoor Education Program Specialist will manage new and existing programs and program partnerships, while working within the scope and sequence of the Camp and Outdoor Education departmental yearly plan. This role is essential to helping close the gap in all Outdoor Education areas (conservation, environmental sciences, recreational activities, etc.) and provide opportunities and resources for girls to become eco-steward leaders. They will work on both short-term and long-term goals that fit within the strategic plan of the department, as well as the Council's overall goals.
The Outdoor Education Program Specialist will incorporate all current GSUSA initiatives and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) into the design of all programs. She/he will develop and implement project plans and maintain relationships with volunteers and community partners while focusing heavily on increasing participation throughout GSSEM communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work alongside the Vice President of Outdoor Experience and the Camp Team to adhere to budgeting needs, provide a program strategy, meet objectives, and manage partnerships effectively.
- Research, coordinate and manage Outdoor and Environmental Education programming, including serving as a facilitator and chaperone for some programs.
- Serve as a project manager including tracking all tasks, ensuring all deadlines are met, connecting with appropriate partners, securing venues, procuring all necessary items, developing an evaluation for each program, and planning appropriate meetings with stakeholders/community partners.
- Work with partners and vendors to provide impactful and relevant programming throughout all GSSEM communities.
- Provide exceptional customer service to ensure that troop leaders, parents and girl members are well informed and fully prepared to attend camp and communicate policy and program procedures as needed.
- Develop agendas for internal and external meetings.
- Draft sensitive and high-priority emails, documents, documents and other correspondence.
- Work closely with Customer Care department to support the registration process by responding to all participant inquiries.
- Work with the marketing and communications team to plan advertising strategies for all programming and department growth
- Monitor individual programming budgets and work with the Philanthropy/Fund Development team on securing grant funding for programming and departmental supplies.
- Provide timely feedback on project plans when needed.
- Arrange all event services such as programming supplies, food, transportation, etc. as needed.
- Maintain current community and outdoor and environmental education industry partnerships.
- Develop and foster new community and outdoor environmental education industry partnerships.
- Collaborate and network to build relationships with community organizations and groups, colleges, universities, social clubs and groups to leverage their participation and support.
- Prepare and submit reports in a timely manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree with concentration in a related field with preferred or equivalent experience (Environmental Science, Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management, Environmental Sustainability and Interpretation, etc.)
- Minimum of three (3) years project/program management in the natural resource education field.
- Minimum of three (3) years working directly with youth, external partners and/or volunteers
Position Qualifications
- This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
- Demonstrated skills in creative thinking, problem solving and innovation.
- Demonstrated skills in administration and budgeting.
- Ability to provide training and put together comprehensive PowerPoints, etc.
- Experience supporting leadership/management team.
- Proven track record in developing relationships with youth, staff, volunteers, and community organizations/partners.
- Proven track record of outdoor and environmental education programming development and implementation.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with other departments to meet mutual goals.
- Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn additional computer programs.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend hours.
- Must be willing to travel as required.
Hold minimum certification requirements of CPR and First Aid
