Publishing Pathways Program Intern

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the oldest national civil engineering society in America, is currently seeking an intern for the Publishing Pathways Program. The intern will spend 8 weeks shadowing and performing tasks within each of the ASCE Publications & Standards departments. The intern can expect to learn a broad overview of ASCE’s publishing operations, as well as deep-dives into the functions of each team within the division. The intern can expect to work on projects such as (but not limited to) creating basic reports, assisting with social media posts, file cleanup, and data management. In addition, the intern can expect to job shadow to learn the basic functions of journals editorial and production, books, marketing, standards, business operations, and sales.

 

The Publishing Pathways Program Intern can expect to learn:

 

Technical Skills:

  • Data Management and Analysis: Proficiency in data entry, organization, and evaluation using tools like spreadsheets and databases.
  • Document Management: Skill in scanning, organizing, and storing documents electronically.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to draft clear and concise documents, such as reports and email communications.

Professional Skills:

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in tasks requiring accuracy and precision.
  • Organization and Time Management: The ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, adapt to varied responsibilities, and work efficiently.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Research and Analysis: The ability to gather and review information from various sources.

Specific to the Role:

  • Gain an understanding of Publishing Processes: Familiarity with the scholarly publishing industry and its various stages, such as manuscript processing, production, and marketing.
  • Knowledge of Technical Specifications: Understanding of technical requirements for documents, such as formatting and file types.
  • Use of Publishing Software: Proficiency in using industry-standard software tools (e.g., Editorial Manager, Personify, Klopotek).

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a student enrolled at an accredited community college, university, or graduate program.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment and open to giving and receiving feedback.
  • Basic computer proficiencies such as familiarity with Microsoft Office products and email.

 

This is a paid, in-person internship, Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week, located at ASCE headquarters. Candidates must be able to provide their own transportation.
