Accountant (Full Time)

Summary:

The Memphis Zoo is seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Accountant to join our accounting team. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and reconciling bank statements, general ledger accounts, daily revenue reports, and various balance sheet accounts. The role involves ensuring the accuracy of financial statements, preparing reports, processing journal entries, and handling various accounting functions, including reviewing and posting revenue transactions.

Salary range of $55,000 - $59,000 commensurate with experience.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reconcile bank statements to ensure accurate reflection of checks, wire transfers, charges, cash, and other transactions in the general ledger.
  • Review, analyze and record all revenue.
  • Identify discrepancies between bank statements and the general ledger, resolving issues efficiently.
  • Prepare periodic reports on bank reconciliation and account balances.
  • Monitor and analyze activity in zoo expense and revenue accounts for reasonableness and appropriate department allocation.
  • Perform month-end duties, including account reconciliation, computation of revenue/deferred revenue, and review of revenue trends.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding general ledger transactions and accounting records.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies in accounting records and financial data.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in accounting, with a strong understanding of general ledger reconciliation, bank statement reconciliation, and month-end close processes.
  • Familiarity with accounting software and systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar systems).

  • Experience in non-profit or zoo accounting.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Controller.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Full-time positions are defined as positions scheduled to work approximately up to 40 hours a week. Scheduling is at the discretion of the manager. This position may occasionally require flexible hours, including holidays. 

This position is considered exempt under the federal and state wage and hour laws.  

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee will primarily work indoors within a typical office environment. This role is primarily a sedentary position.

This position requires frequent sitting and may occasionally move or lift objects up to 20 pounds.
