About Department & Key Responsibilities

Austin Water Customer Insights and Solutions Division – The mission of the division is to elevate the experience of Austin Water customers through innovative, intelligence-driven initiatives and the enhancement of existing customer interaction methodologies.

 

Position Overview:

 

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Technical Writing Student Intern to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for a student passionate about writing, technology, and communication to gain hands-on experience in creating high-quality technical documentation. The intern will work closely with business process consultants, business systems analysts, utility account analysts and other stakeholders to develop clear, concise, and user-friendly content.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather information about business processes and services.
  • Create, edit, and maintain technical documentation, including user manuals, step-by-step process guides, FAQs, and training materials.
  • Review and update existing documentation to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Assist in the creation of diagrams, illustrations, and multimedia content to enhance documentation.
  • Test and validate documentation by following instructions and identifying potential gaps or improvements.
  • Organize and manage documentation repositories using version control methods.
  • Learn and apply industry-standard tools and approaches for technical writing

Qualifications:

 

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with basic technical concepts and a willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, MS SharePoint, or similar tools.
  • Experience with or an interest in learning tools like Adobe Acrobat and MS Visio.
  • Basic understanding of project management approaches is a plus.
