Communications and Marketing Internship Job Description
Department Overview: The Communications and Marketing Department aims to help Dana-Farber project its leadership in cancer research and care. Our goals are to build awareness of Dana-Farber’s mission and successes among national and international audiences, support the Institute's fundraising efforts, help employees be more effective in their jobs, and enhance communication with patients and families. The department includes five areas of focus: External Communications, Branded Content & Creative Services, Strategic Planning & Insights, Workforce & Patient/Family Communications, and Marketing & Digital Channels.
Audiences: The key target audiences for our Communications and Marketing content include current and prospective patients and their loved ones; regional and national physicians; national, local, and industry media outlets; and Dana-Farber’s workforce members.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications and Marketing Intern will provide content support across multiple communications channels. As this internship will have access to a range of areas within our in-house Communications and Marketing team, interns may have opportunities to work on the following types of projects:
- Participate in meetings across the Communications and Marketing Department and with clinicians and staff.
- Support web quality and accessibility efforts.
- Assist in writing news, feature, and blog stories.
- Assist with maintenance of the Dana-Farber intranet, including creating new pages.
- Support the development and implementation of marketing strategies.
- Support the development of targeted press releases to pitch compelling patient/donor/event stories to key media contacts.
- Work with the social media team to support implementation of social strategies.
Intern reports to: Communications and Marketing Department Internship Co-managers.
Commitment of time: 20-30 hours per week for 12 weeks
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Zoom.
- Ability to learn new computer applications.
- Knowledge of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter(X), etc.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with peers, leadership, senior clinicians, and external contacts.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and pay attention to detail.
- Excellent ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through on projects.
- Ability to take a proactive approach to problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex projects and other assignments
- Ability to work independently and take a proactive approach to managing workflow and project work responsibilities with dedicated team leads.
As this is a hybrid position, requiring at least one day and up to three days on site in Boston per week, preference will be given to applicants located in the Greater Boston area. Per Dana-Farber policy, the selected candidate may only work remotely from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).
