TITLE:                              Classroom Teacher                             

 

STATUS:                           10 months, full-time, exempt

 

REPORTS TO:                 Associate Director

 

SUPERVISION OVER:      Provide coaching/mentoring and indirect supervision for assigned Educational Assistants

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY:     As a member of Excell Academy’s Academic Team, the Classroom Teacher is responsible for setting standards and laying a foundation of academic and social success for students’ grades K-8 by providing and supporting high quality, relevant educational instruction in a positive learning environment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Elementary Education

 

CERTIFICATE & LICENSURE:         

  • Minnesota State Teacher license in Elementary Education

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching methods and developmentally appropriate classroom activities

 

  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

 

  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to diffuse and resolve conflict with students, parents, and co-workers by demonstrating poise, tact and diplomacy.

 

  • Ability to train and provide work direction to others.

 

  • Ability to objectively coach Educational Assistants through conflict and difficult interpersonal situations.

 

  • Ability to collaborate with and provide positive guidance to Educational Assistants

 

  • A proven passion for working with urban and/or economically disadvantaged youth and an unshakeable belief in their potential.

 

  • Demonstrated track record of successfully working with people of color and socio-economically disadvantaged communities AND/OR training in cultural competency and/or institutional racism.

 

  • Entrepreneurial outlook and charter school commitment

 

  • Computer competency in Microsoft Windows environment includes word processing, e-mail, Internet, Excel, database management and recordkeeping.

 

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

 

  • A self-starter with excellent organizational skills who effectively prioritizes workload and multiple tasks to align with Excell’s goals and needs.

 

  • Proficient in completing required duties accurately and efficiently according to established timelines.

 

  • Regular, prompt attendance is essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Academic Planning and Instruction 
    • Plan and organize quality lesson plans, presentations, class activities, guest speakers, and assessments that meet group and individual needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
    • Provide learning experiences that are culturally relevant and fun.
    • Deliver appropriate instruction that is based on the developmental stages of students.
    • Diagnose, analyze, and adjust lesson plans for the purpose of providing appropriate instruction that considers the individual needs and learning styles of students.
    • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and creative strategies that engage and enhance critical, creative, and evaluative thinking of students.
    • Provide individualized and small group instruction as needed.
    • Knowledgeable about the classroom subject matters
    • Communicate regularly with Specialists to integrate curricula for interdisciplinary lessons.
    • Implement current best practices to promote student learning.
    • Budget class time effectively
    • Use technology to enhance instruction.
    • Work collaboratively with resource personnel such as Curriculum Coordinator when developing lesson plans.
    • Effectively utilize and manage designated classroom budget for supplies and instruction.
    • Actively utilize the Curriculum Coordinator as a resource for effective planning and instruction

 

  • Learning Environment & Classroom Management
    • Establish and maintain high expectations of self, students, co-workers, and parents.
    • Establish and maintain a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment.
    • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve a classroom climate conducive for learning.
    • Create learning experiences that build confidence and a strong sense of self-worth for students.
    • Manage classroom environment including behavior, organization, time, and paperwork.
    • Establish a class environment that fosters integrated learning, thinking, cooperation, and personal and social growth.
    • Anticipating and deescalating classroom conflicts in a manner that minimizes disruptions to the learning experience.
    • Conduct social conferencing with students to resolve conflicts.
    • Uphold and enforce school rules and administrative policies.
    • Establish rules and problem-solving guidelines and help students take ownership for solving problems.
    • Encourage students to feel capable and competent and build a sense of community by giving students classroom responsibilities.
    • Actively utilize the Behavior Intervention Specialist Team as a resource relevant to classroom management issues

 

  • Measurement and Reporting
    • Monitor student academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction.
    • Conduct formal and informal assessments of student performance on an ongoing basis.
    • Devise written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as factual knowledge.
    • Systematically measure student performance by means of a variety of summative and formative assessment tools, such as teacher-made tests and standard or alternative assessments to measure learning.
    • Maintain individual student records, files, and reports of student academic progress through on-line grade book in a manner that preserves confidentiality at all times.
    • Proctor standardized tests.

 

  • Student/Family Communication & Relations
    • Treat parents as the students first and primary teacher with whom Excell is partnering to ensure students’ academic and social success.
    • Be responsible for ongoing parent contact and actively engage parent involvement in student learning.
    • Refer students to and participate in Student-Teacher Support Team meetings as needed.
    • Identify student needs and cooperate with parents and other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning issues.
    • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means (e.g., phone calls, e-mails, letters) to inform them about the school programs and discuss student progress.
    • Assist parents and community members in finding answers to questions (i.e., good “customer” service)
    • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students and parents and demonstrate sensitivity and cultural competence.
    • Utilize the Behavior Intervention Specialist Team as a resource relevant to student/family concerns and necessary services for student academic and social success.

 

  • Supervision & Coaching
    • Responsible for the indirect supervision of Educational Assistants by providing daily coaching, mentoring and feedback relevant to classroom duties and student support.
    • Provide Educational Assistants with conflict resolution and problem-solving support for classroom related issues.
    • First point of contact for Educational Assistants for information, classroom support, questions, etc.

 

  • Professional Development 
  • Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through active engagement in relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Research current best practices relevant to instructional strategies that promote student academic and social success.
  • Make effective use of community resources (e.g., guest speakers, etc.) to enhance the instructional program and learning experience.
  • Work with other Classroom Teachers to ensure consistency.
  • Actively participate in grade level academic team meetings

 

  • School Involvement
    • Actively participate on one or more school committees
    • Actively participate at school events, including but not limited to,staff orientation, student/family orientation, annual meeting, open house, Core Knowledge Night, family information sessions, etc.
    • Facilitate and mediate Eye-to-Eye and/or other student conflict resolution sessions as needed.
    • Monitor playground, buses, cafeteria, and hallway duties as needed or directed.

 

  • Mental and Physical Requirements
    • Ability to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
    • Able to stoop, kneel, bend at waist, and reach on a daily basis.
    • Able to perform general office administrative activities such as copying, filing, using the telephone, etc.
    • Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
