IT STEM Internship Program

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Information Technology’s College STEM Internship Program is designed to recruit diverse college students majoring in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline. The program provides flexible work experiences to assist students in making connections between textbook knowledge and real-world experiences.

Required Attachments: Application, Cover Letter, Resume, Current College Transcript  dated after February 1, 2025 for Academic Year 2024-2025 – Unofficial transcript accepted. Applicants should indicate on their application and cover letter their field of interest (first choice and second choice).*Note: Applications missing these required documents will be considered incomplete and/or applications with incorrect documents will not reviewed by the department.

Application Deadline: 11:59 PM, Saturday, March 1, 2025

Expected Duration & Schedule: Candidates will work a 20–40-hour internship between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday - Wednesday for up to 12 weeks (May 22, 2025 – August 13, 2025). Normal work hours may vary depending on the position. Flexibility for school schedules and planned time off is allowable. The position offers a hybrid schedule with in-office and telework hours (within VA and NC). The applicant is responsible for their own transportation to and from work during the internship.

  • Data & Information Management – Digital Accessibility Specialist (1)
  • Enterprise Architecture & Strategy (2)

The IT Internship program date will be May 22 – Aug 13: Internship Program Dates (Thursday – Wednesday Work Week)

  • April 7-16: Phone/Virtual Interviews (dates subject to change)
  • Apr 21: Selections (date subject to change)
  • April 28 – May 9: Onboarding Period
  • May 22, May 29, June 5: Thursday Starts Date
