Policy Specialist

Arnold & Porter is seeking three (3) Policy Specialists for the Legislative & Public Policy Practice Group in the Washington, DC office to start in May/June 2025 or earlier.

These three Policy Specialists will be working in multiple policy areas, including: appropriations, congressional investigations, education, energy, foreign sovereigns, financial services, national defense, tax, technology and communications, trade, and transportation. While the practice group has a substantial number of professionals working in healthcare and life sciences policy, these open positions will not be working in those policy spaces.

With approximately 40 professionals in Washington, the Legislative & Public Policy Practice Group advocates for clients before the United States Congress and the departments and agencies of the Executive branch.  Professionals in this group include political appointees in recent Presidential administrations and a bipartisan group of Congressional staff alumni.

The Legislative & Public Policy Practice Group is Chambers-rated as one of the top legislative practices at a national law firm.  The Legislative & Public Policy Practice Group works in a high-energy, fast-paced environment that rewards initiative and teamwork in the pursuit of quality client service. The primary focus of the group is on Congressional and regulatory advocacy on topics including: appropriations, congressional investigations, education, energy, foreign sovereigns, financial services, healthcare and life sciences, national defense, tax, technology and communications, trade, and transportation.  Clients include globally recognized brands, Fortune 500 companies, innovative start-ups, leading associations, healthcare systems, educational institutions, units of local government, foreign governments, and coalitions.

Qualifications

  • Four-year degree and excellent academic credentials.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in federal legislative and public policy roles, or are recent graduates with a past government relations internship.
  • Relevant professional or internship experience might include staff work in Congress, a statehouse, or for a corporation or association in general government affairs.
  • Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate interest in one or more of the following policy sectors: appropriations, congressional investigations, education, energy, foreign sovereigns, financial services, national defense, tax, technology and communications, trade, and transportation.

All applicants should have a four-year degree, excellent academic credentials, and references. All Policy Specialists will be required to be registered lobbyists under the Lobbying Disclosure Act. Some Policy Specialists may also be working for clients that require registration under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The Policy Specialist position is an entry-level position. Policy Specialists are eligible to be promoted after three years to senior policy specialist, the second level of a four-stage career progression for non-attorney professionals.

Please submit a cover letter, resume, transcript and a 3-5 page writing sample on a advocacy-based topic of their choosing. Submitting a writing sample of more than 5 pages or failing to submit a transcript will eliminate a candidate from consideration.

All interested candidates must submit their documents by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, March 7.

The anticipated starting base salary for this position is $60,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
