Biological Technician

Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe (JST) is seeking a full-time Biological Technician to contribute to vital research and management efforts on the Dungeness and Protection Island Wildlife Refuges. This is a hands-on, field-based position ideal for individuals passionate about conservation and eager to apply their skills in a dynamic environment.
About the Role:
As a Biological Technician, you will play a crucial role in collecting biological data essential for Refuge research, management, and regulatory decisions. Your work will directly support the preservation and enhancement of these unique ecosystems. Responsibilities include a variety of tasks, such as avian and mammal surveys, invasive species monitoring (including leading European green crab monitoring and control), and habitat restoration. You will collaborate with staff, researchers, and volunteers, contributing valuable data and reports to the Refuge Manager.
Essential Functions:
- Field Operations: Conduct terrestrial and marine habitat surveys and improvement projects; perform avian, wildlife, and vegetation monitoring and surveys; implement habitat enhancement and restoration projects; execute invasive species and pest management activities; and maintain field equipment and supplies. May lead assigned personnel in field activities.
- Habitat Improvement: Plan and implement terrestrial and aquatic habitat improvement projects with support from the Refuge Manager.
- Data Management & Reporting: Manage data, conduct basic analyses, and provide reports to the Refuge Manager.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support to Refuge staff and researchers from other agencies.
- Integrated Pest Management: Assist with Integrated Pest Management activities.
- Fire Management Support: Support implementation of the Fire Management Plan for the Dungeness and Protection Island Wildlife Refuges in coordination with the Olympic National Park and National Forest Service.
- Research Support: Support outside researchers, including government and academic partners, working on refuge-based programs or projects.
- Record Keeping: Prepare reports and maintain activity records associated with Refuge management.
- Public Engagement: Engage with visitors, coordinate volunteer work, and lead volunteer crews as needed.
- Compliance: Adhere to all JST policies and procedures, including safety standards and work practices.
- Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Experience conducting wildlife or vegetation surveys.
- Experience with data management, such as entering and managing data in Excel.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background investigation.
