Regional Internship Program: Summer 2025
Organization Overview: For nearly a decade, Murphy Forest Management, LLC has been managing privately-owned timberland on behalf of its clients. We currently oversee more than 10,000 acres of family-owned forests in Central New York, the Tug Hill region, and the western Adirondacks. Our services encompass management plan development, timber cruising, timber appraisals, herbicide applications, tree planting, timber sales, and timber trespass inventories. Consulting foresters play diverse roles and must be proficient in a variety of techniques and strategies to equip our clients with the necessary tools for sustainable forest management long into the future.
Internship Description:Candidates will be expected to work alongside industry professionals on a variety of tasks with 75% constituting herbicide applications and 25% other forestry related activities including:
- Herbicide applications to eliminate invasive plants and interfering vegetation.
- Timber inventories for management plan updates, timberland appraisals, and carbon sequestration cruises.
- Reforestation, tree planting, and tree pruning operations.
- Timber marking and timber sale layout for timber harvests.
- Log sales, log bucking, and maximizing the value of harvested trees.
- Client meetings to determine the best approach to managing their forestland.
Required Qualifications:Candidates must have an interest in consulting forestry, procurement forestry, or, more broadly, in the private sector of the forest industry. They should also:
- Enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather and be capable of performing manual labor in the summer heat.
- Work well in a group setting, as well as independently in the woods, often without cell phone service.
- Desire to improve their technical skills in plant identification and timber measurements.
- Be eager to improve confidence in their forestry skills and professionalism.
- Must enjoy camping in the woods all week while working on projects far from the office.
Additional Information: This internship is open to Forestry and Natural Resources students with an interest in professional forestry and reasonable plant identification skills.
- The internship is expected to start on May 27, 2025, and end on August 22, 2025, or when the intern must return to school full-time. Accommodations for school and family vacations will be made with advance notice.
- Compensation starts at $20/hour with 40 hours per week expected.
- Hours per week may vary depending on the distance and weather conditions.
- Transportation to and from the office in Westmoreland, N.Y. is required.
Vests and equipment to be provided by the company, and sometimes my dog will join us. We also reimburse all interns who wish to acquire a NYS Pesticide Technicians license while interning with us.
