About the Duke-Margolis Summer Experience Internship Program
The Duke- Margolis Summer Experience Program is a 10-week summer internship program that offers students opportunities to contribute to a variety of health policy projects through a collaborative and mentored summer research experience.
Project Description
Focus Area: Global Health, Cost Effectiveness, Health Economics
The Global Health Product Introduction Research Intern will provide research support for a Gates Foundation grant to work in Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa to better bundle information, innovations, and incentives to achieve effective, efficient, and equitable access to innovative health products and services. The Research Intern will support the team’s efforts to work with local and global partners to improve the policy, financing, and advocacy enabling environments for these bundles. Primary tasks may include collecting and collating publicly available data, performing literature reviews, supporting project management and stakeholder engagement, and communicating findings. The team strives to enable more effective and transparent alignment between country priorities and innovation prioritization; more efficient innovation introduction, from regulatory review to health workforce training, and more equitable participation in prioritization and advocacy as well as ultimate innovation access.
The successful candidate will have an interest in health systems, particularly in Africa, as well as prior experience conducting and communicating about decision-focused qualitative and/or quantitative implementation or operations research.
Preferred candidate skills and characteristics:
- Commitment to scientific integrity and high-quality research;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Strong written communication;
- proficiency in Excel;
- Proficiency in French preferred;
- Ability to work both independently and as a contributing team member
- Flexibility and comfort with minimal structure
Project deliverables:
- Deliverable 1: Contribute to market analysis and report for possible bundles
- Deliverable 2: Analysis of policy landscape and a written policy memo
- Note: Deliverables are subject to change and there may be additional deliverables and project needs to evolve
Majors/Minors: Global Health, Health Economics, Public Policy, International Relations, MBA in Health Sector Management, Public Health
Education Level: 3rd/4th Year UG or Master’s Level or PhD applicants
