Student Worker - Quality Assurance Intern

Position Summary
CHiPS laboratory is looking for detail-oriented engineering students to develop and implement quality assurance methods for a State of Texas contract project. Click here to read the TXST Newsroom article on the project. The role involves experimental design, developing testing methodologies, and analyzing data for consumer goods evaluation.


Core Responsibilities
•Execute comprehensive product testing according to ISO/ASTM standards using universal testing machines and automated systems
•Create test fixtures and prototypes in SOLIDWORKS, following design thinking principles for problem-solving
•Perform root cause analysis and FMEA; implement statistical process control for quality monitoring
•Develop and document testing methodologies while maintaining detailed inspection reports and quality control logs
•Generate technical reports and data visualizations to communicate findings and recommendations

Required Qualifications:
•Current Texas State University sophomore/junior undergraduate student (graduate students not eligible)
•Must have completed or be enrolled in: ENGR 2300, IE 3320, ME 3112, MFGE 2132 or equivalent courses
•Highly proficient in SOLIDWORKS
•Experience in using equipment:
–rapid prototyping - 3D printing, laser cutting or engraving
–industrial equipment such as manual lathe, manual mill, etc.
•Experience with GD&T principles and mechanical testing procedures and equipment
•Experience or skill in using metrology tools
•Working knowledge of statistical analysis and Microsoft Office Suite
•Strong attention to detail

Work Schedule and Location:
•A minimum of 10 hours of work per week
•In-person presence and availability
•Personal transportation to access the STAR Park facility

Employee Evaluation Process:
Interview selection and decisions will be communicated to applicants via Handshake and email. Only the candidates selected for interview will be communicated via email.

Timeline:
1.Review submissions: All submissions will be reviewed by March 3
2.Interviews: Schedule interviews continuously as applications come in
3.Final decision on hiring by March 9

Post-Hiring:
•Supervisor will hold weekly meetings to assess student performance
•Detailed evaluations will be conducted at the end of each long semester
•Performance-based pay increases possible after one semester

Pay Rate Determination: The starting pay rate is $15/hr. Increases may occur based on performance or a positive evaluation after Spring’25 semester. All pay plan information for student employment at the university can be found at: University Pay Plan
